EC105.143 1
Objectives :

Up on the completion of this topic, you will be

able to understand

• Alpha, Beta and Gamma factors.

EC105.143 2
• Current amplification factor is also called as current gain.

EC105.143 3
• BJT transistor will have three values of current gains when it is
connected in three configurations separately.

EC105.143 4
• In CB configuration the current gain is known as Alpha (α).

EC105.143 5
• In CE configuration the current gain is known as Beta (β).

EC105.143 6
• In CC configuration the current gain is known as Gamma (γ).

EC105.143 7
• ALPHA (α) : It is defined as the ratio of change in collector
current to the change in emitter current at constant VCB

∀ α = (∆IC)/(∆IE) [Neglecting the leakage current]

VCB = constant.

EC105.143 8
• Value of α can be found from output characteristics of CB
configuration.

• Since the value of IC is always less than the value of IE, the
value of α is always less than one. It’s typical value lies
between 0.9 to 0.99.

EC105.143 9
• BETA (β) : It is defined as the ratio of change in collector
current to change in base current at constant VCE

∀ β = (∆IC)/(∆IB) [Neglecting the leakage currents ]

VCE = constant.

EC105.143 10
• Value of β can be found from output characteristics of CE
configuration.

• Since the value of IB is very small in comparison to IC.

• The value of β is very high. Its typical value lies between 50

to few hundreds.

EC105.143 11
• GAMA (γ) : it is defined as the ratio of change in the emitter
current to change in base current at constant VCC.

∀ γ = (∆IE)/(∆IB) [Neglecting the leakage currents ]

VCC = constant

EC105.143 12
• Value of γ can be found from output characteristics of CC
configuration.

• Since the value of IB is very small in comparison to IE , so the

value of γ is very high, greater than β.

EC105.143 13
Summary

∀ α = (∆IC)/(∆IE) VCB = constant.

∀ β = (∆IC)/(∆IB) VCE = constant.

∀ γ = (∆IE)/(∆IB) VCC = constant.
