EC304.50 1
OBJECTIVES

On the completion of this period, you would able

to know

• What is Shift Register?

• Working principle of Serial in – Serial out Register.

• Working principle of Serial in  – Parallel out Registers.

EC304.50 3
SHIFT REGISTERS

• Shift Register moves the stored bits either to Left or to Right.

• Shifting of bits is essential for certain arithmetic and logical

operations.

• Used for temporary storage between the processing unit and

unit requiring this data.

• A shift register is characterised by how data is loaded into and

read from the storage units.

EC304.50 4
DATA TRANSFER IN REGISTERS

Two methods of data transfer

• Serial transfer
• Parallel transfer

Four types of data transfer in Registers

• Serial in – Serial out (SISO)

• Serial in – Parallel out (SIPO)
• Parallel in – Serial out (PISO)
• Parallel in – Parallel out (PIPO)

SERIAL IN – SERIAL OUT SHIFT REGISTER

• This Shift Register accepts data serially i.e., one bit at a time
on a single input line.

• The content of this register is shifted by one bit for each clock
pulse

• In general, Shift register are constructed by ‘D’ flip-flops.

EC304.50 11
SERIAL IN – PARALLEL OUT
SHIFT REGISTER

• It consists of one serial input and outputs are taken from all
the flip-flops parallelly.

• The data in the register shifts by one bit for each clock pulse.
