EC305.6 3
• Modulation Process broadly divided into
continuous modulation and pulse modulation.
• In continuous – wave (cw) modulation, a
sinusoidal wave is used as carrier.
• From the previous topic recollect mathematical
equation of carrier wave is given by

Vc = vc Sin wc t where

Vc = Instantaneous voltage of carrier

Vc = Amplitude of carrier

WC = Angular velocity at carrier

frequency
EC305.6 4
Continuous wave modulation
• When the amplitude of the carrier is varied in
accordance with the base band signal (modulating
signal) then amplitude modulation is obtained.

• When the angle of the carrier is varied then angle

modulation is obtained.

• The angle modulation is further sub divided into

frequency modulation (F.M) and phase modulation (P.M)
in which instantaneous frequency and phase of the
carrier, respectively are varied in accordance with the
base band signal.

EC305.6 5
Pulse Modulation
• In pulse modulation, the carrier consists of a periodic
sequence of rectangular pulses. The pulse modulation is
further subdivided into analog and digital type.

• In analog pulse modulation, the amplitude, duration , position

of a pulse is varied in accordance with sample values of the
base band signal to have pulse amplitude modulation (PAM),
pulse duration modulation (PDM) or pulse position
modulation (PPM), respectively.

EC305.6 6
• Application of A.M and F.M

– In India amplitude modulation is used in radio broad

casting.

– In television transmission, frequency modulation is

used for sound signals and amplitude modulation is
used for picture signals.
