Opening Sequence Analysis

Learning Objectives:
1. To analyse and apply the use of conventions for your chosen film genre.

1. Review your blog post regarding your treatment feedback. 2. Discuss, as a group, what it is you need to do to produce an effective film opening sequence? TASK: Create a SWOT analysis of your treatment. Then decide in your group what you need to change/adapt or add to move forward with your foundation portfolio main task production.

Strengths
The plot should make audiences want to watch the whole film as the emphasis on character relationships will create intrigue.

Weaknesses
We havent used enough genre conventions to connote the genre of romcom effectively.

Opportunities
We will have the opportunity use suitable settings to film. We will be able to edit a variety of shot types together creatively.

Threats
We may not be able to find enough actors available at the same time.

Opening Sequence Analysis


1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Source an image of the film poster or DVD cover. Give the directors name and year of release. View the opening sequence and briefly outline what happens in the first two minutes. Add the link if viewed online. Identify the use of genre conventions, give examples of how they are used and explain how they connote the genre of film. Describe the characters and dialogue, explain how camera / mise-en-scene / editing / sound are used to attract the audience. Evaluate the audience appeal for the film, who are the TA and why? Consider how this might inspire the planning of your opening sequence? USE TERMINOLOGY: Denotes and connotes as well as technical terms for example, shot types (long shot), editing techniques (transitions) and representations (stereotype or archetype).
