Setting the stage for a new profession 10 chemical engineering achievements Famous Chemical Engineers Related fields / Thrust areas Top employers in Chemical engineering Evolving fields in Chemical Engineering
The essence of engineering as a crusty veteran told his engineering rookies is to be only as complicated as you have to be. What he left unsaid, though not undemonstrated is that you must also be as able to get as complicated as the problem demands
These terms used frequently and terms like engineering and technology are interchangeable, but are different Engineering is a specific profession uses Science and Maths to solve a particular problem for society in a safe and economical manner (text book definition) The body of knowledge, processes, and artifacts that result from engineering is technology. Almost everything made by humans to solve a need is a technology While Engineers concentrate on developing and using technology, it is important to remember there was technology long before there was engineering
It is possible to invent a new technology without engineering it Engineers are people who seek to do and use measured quantities such as pressure, temperature, flowrates etc. in doing so Scientist studies the world as it is and produces theories to describe it. They are people who seek to know and use fundamental quantities to explain Engineering is the art of doing things well with one dollar which others can do with two dollars
ARTHUR M. WELLINGTON (Former Editor of Engineering News, A Civil and Chemical Engineer)
An effort in 1880, by George Davis to unite varied professionals through a "Society of Chemical Engineers" proved unsuccessful 12 lectures presented by Davies in UK based on experience and knowledge. For all intents and purposes the chemical engineering profession began in 1888. The US did not accept it. Professor Lewis Norton of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology introduced "Course X" thereby uniting chemical engineers through a formal degree. Other universities followed (Penn and Tulane Universities)

In a survey study performed by sociology researchers from the University of Southern California and the University of California at Irvine, Chemical Engineering was the only Engineering field to make the top 10 list of most prestigious occupations.
highest-paid graduates of all the engineering disciplines, closely followed by mechanical and electronic engineers. A chemical engineering graduate can expect their salary to at least double over 20 years, and the median salary is 40,000, according to the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE, UK). "There are relatively fewer chemical engineering graduates, compared with the rest of engineering, and demand is high at the moment, especially in the oil, gas and process industries The UK's Engineering and Technology Board (ETB)
The following majors have the highest salaries paid to 2005-06 graduates (average salary offers are in parentheses): Chemical engineering ($55,900) Computer engineering ($54,877) Electrical/electronics and communications engineering, ($52,899) Mechanical engineering ($50,672) Computer science ($50,046) Accounting ($45,723) Economics/finance, including banking ($45,191) Civil engineering ($44,999) Business administration/management ($39,850) Marketing/marketing management, including marketing research ($36,260) The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE)

To conclude
The breadth of scientific and technical knowledge inherent in the profession has caused some to describe the chemical engineer as the "universal engineer." Chemical engineering is not a profession that has to dwell on the achievements of the past for comfort, for its greatest accomplishments are yet to come
