NOSE TACKLE
0 TECHNIQUE
Get off the ball and get hands on the center Knock him backwards Do not attempt to fight across the center Responsible for the backside A-gap Do not allow the center to climb to the linebackers

1 TECHNIQUE
Lateral step and then attack the center, knock him backward and key his movement Maintain outside leverage on the offensive man and do not get reached Do not allow the center to climb to the next level Defend the strong A-gap Never allow yourself to be man blocked; always command a double team

DEFENSIVE ENDS
4I TECHNIQUE
Lateral step with the inside foot and key the guard When the guard steps at you attack the offensive tackle and become a protector for the inside linebackers Do not get reached by the guard, fight a down block by the tackle and keep him from climbing or turn your hips into a double team When the guard steps away become an attacker Do not get cut off by the tackle, attack any pulling lineman, rip up the field to avoid being washed down by the offensive tackle

5 TECHNIQUE
Step with the outside foot, shock and lock the tackle Do not allow the tackle to jump through to the inside linebackers Bend with the offensive tackle if he blocks down inside Defend the C-gap and never get reached

INSIDE LINEBACKERS
Align over the guards, heels at 5 yards Read through the guard to the flow Run to the ball working downhill, press any opening Guard Reads: 1. Down Block: Zone away, iso to or away, or power and counter to 2. Out Block: Iso away, zone away 3. Pull to Center (make a PULL call): Power and counter away 4. Pull away from Center: Outside zone and toss 5. Base Block: Fullback run 6. Pass Set: Pass, screen ands draw

OUTSIDE LINEBACKERS
TIGHT END SIDE Outside shade, inside foot up, hands on the TE Key TE and disrupt release, but do not chase Contain the outside run and do not get reached Step and squeeze with the tight end down inside looking for a lead blocker; force the ball carrier to change his path Engage a lead blocker forcing the ball carrier to change his path Trail away (run-shuffle-run), bootleg, counter, reverse OPEN SIDE 3 x 3 off the OT and key his movement Blitz off the edge with outside leverage on the ball Same responsibilities as TE side

SAFETIES
9 to 11 yards off #2, 1 yard inside or outside his alignment Key the release of #2 Be slow to read but quick to react Flow to
Stack the OLB and make him right Fit off the OLB

Flow away
Sweep the eyes and scan the offense Work down to B/A-gap at a depth of 7 yards Run the alley looking for the cutback or the tight end drag

CORNERS
7 x 1 yards off #1 with inside leverage Primarily pass defender that will provide only late secondary run support Read QB 3-step drop Key the receiver after 3-step drop Overplay the FADE route and take away the POST by alignment Flow to
maintain outside leverage on the ball

Flow away
get into the proper pursuit angle to prevent a big play

PASS COVERAGES
BLUE - Quarters Coverage
Four deep zone with match up man coverage principles Default coverage for all fronts and stunts

BLACK - Man Free

Man-to-man with a deep middle of the field defender used only when tagged to the end of a defensive front and stunt

BLUE COVERAGE
CORNERS Inside leverage man to man coverage on #1 Read the drop of QB (3 step vs. 5 step) If #1 GOES VERTICAL
Man coverage on all routes Defending the POST and FADE routes are the highest priority

If #1 GOES INSIDE
Carry #2 for 2 steps and make a CROSSER call to alert the OLB Get your eyes on #2 and match his route

If #1 HITCHES
Make a HITCH call to alert the OLB Get your eyes on #2 and match his route expecting a deep corner route (SMASH)

BLUE COVERAGE
SAFETY
Key the release of the #2 receiver #2 GOES VERTICAL
Match #2 only when he passes a depth of 10 yards Maintain inside leverage and force #2 wider

#2 GOES IN/OUT
Look first to help with the #1 receiver and then look for routes coming from the other side of the formation Do not match the #2 receiver into the flat

If there are 2 receivers aligned with 5 yards or less spacing and there is no outside linebacker to defend the curl/flat, then a READ-IT call can be made by the Safety to notify the corner that they will switch receivers if they cross within the first 5yards of their route.

BLUE COVERAGE
SAFETY (#2 has gone IN or OUT) #1 RUNS A CURL
ROB the curl and TACKLE the flat Get underneath the curl route and rob it Continue through the curl receiver into the flat if the ball is thrown to the flat

#1 RUNS A POST
Roll to the post with inside leverage bracketing the #1 receiver with the corner

#1 RUNS A DIG
Spin with the dig staying underneath the receiver

#1 RUNS A SLANT
Punch the #1 receiver and make a big hit

BLUE COVERAGE
OUTSIDE LINEBACKER Responsible to match the #2 receiver Drop for width, think flat first and curl second #2 GOES VERTICAL
Jam through #2 trying to widen his route and continue to work outside Listen for a HITCH call, then buzz the flat

#2 GOES OUT
Match #2 to the flat, get on his hip and run with him If #2 runs a wheel route, flatten your path and match him

#2 GOES IN
Carry him for 2 steps while calling RAT, then let him go and settle Look for a new #2 crossing from the other side of the field

BLUE COVERAGE
INSIDE LINEBACKER (short side of the field) Match the #2 receiver to the short side of the field with a similar technique as the outside linebacker to the wide side of the field Responsible for the HOOK/FLAT since there is effectively no curl to the short side of the field INSIDE LINEBACKER Drop on the #3 receiver Listen for a RAT call, then jump the RAT forcing him out of his route Wall off any crossing routes

TRIANGLE ADJUSTMENT
CORNER (3 receiver side)
Responsible for defending the flat Creep down to the line of scrimmage just before snap Collision #1 forcing him inside Never allow an outside release by #1, but if it happens turn and run with him Key #2 and #3 receivers and match either of them to the flat Versus a FLOOD route defend the mid-level routes and break up to the shallow route when the ball is thrown

CORNER (1 receiver side)

Man to man coverage on #1 keeping inside leverage and forcing the longest and most difficult throw Your only help may be the will linebacker underneath

TRIANGLE ADJUSTMENT

SAFETY (3 receiver side)

Move to a depth of 12 yards over the #2 receiver before the snap Stay on top of any route by the final #1 and #2

SAFETY (1 receiver side)

Move to a depth of 12 to 15 yards favoring the 3 receiver side Stay several yards inside #3 Stay over the top of any vertical route by the final #3 NEVER lose sight of #3 If there is no vertical route by a final #3 help the backside corner

TRIANGLE ADJUSTMENT

OUTSIDE LINEBACKER (3 receiver side) Align over #3 but you are responsible for dropping under #2 NOT a flat defender, the corner will defend the flat If #3 GOES OUT
Snap your eyes outside looking for a #2 Get under the curl by #2 Wall off #2 crossing inside

If #3 is a TE play a 9 technique If #3 is a WR or SLOT get physical with him and re-route him

TRIANGLE ADJUSTMENT
INSIDE LINEBACKER (3 receiver side) Flat step first working to the first inside route Responsible for the first inside route and to wall off any crossing routes If #3 goes out, keep working outside adjusting to the route of #2 If #3 goes vertical, hold him off buying some time for the safety
INSIDE LINEBACKER (1 receiver side) Responsible for HOOK to FLAT and providing inside help on #1 If there is a RB off set to your side, match his route If there is no RB off set to your side, look for a crossing route coming back from the 3 receiver side

BLACK COVERAGE
CORNERS
Inside leverage man to man coverage on the #1 receivers Force the longest thrown for the quarterback

SAFETIES

The safety to the call side (Roger or Louie) will spin down and play man coverage on the #2 receiver to that side The opposite safety will bail to the deep middle of the field

OUTSIDE LINEBACKER
The OLB to the call side will be involved in the blitz The opposite OLB will drop into man coverage on the #2 receiver to that side
