INDIAN RAILWAYS ONLINE RESERVATION SYSTEM

PREFACE
The Objectives of this project is to develop a user friendly software for Railway Department which keeps the information about the route, cancellation of tickets, departure time, arrival time, number of trains available and other such information and maintains the records of passengers travelling in the different trains on different dates reaching different destinations in the system.

Introduction
Indian Railways is the state-owned railway company of India, which owns and operates most of the country's rail transport. It is overseen by the Ministry of Railways of the Government of India. Indian Railways has more than 64,015 kilometres of track and 6,909 stations. It has the world's fourth largest railway network after those of the United States, Russia and China. Indian Railways is divided into 16 zones. The railways traverse the length and breadth of the country and carry over 20 million passengers and 2 million tons of freight daily. It is one of the world's largest commercial or utility employers, with more than 1.6 million employees. As to rolling stock, Indian Railways owns over 200,000 (freight) wagons, 50,000 coaches and 8,000 locomotives.

Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS)

The Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) located in New Delhi, was established as a registered society in 1986 by the Ministry of Railways of India, to be an umbrella organization for all computer activities on Indian Railways. CRIS today designs, develops, implements and maintains most of the important information systems of the Indian Railways.

In 1982,Government set up a Freight Operations Information Systems (FOIS) for freight operations computerisation on Indian Railways, later in 1986,Ministry of Railways established CENTRE FOR RAILWAY INFORMATION SYSTEMS (CRIS) an umbrella for all computer activities on Indian Railways .They also entrusted it with the task of design, development and implementation of the FOIS, along with its associated communications infrastructure. The Centre started functioning from July,1987. It is an autonomous organisation headed by Managing Director. CRIS is mainly a project oriented organisation engaged in development of major computer systems on the Railways. CRIS has acquired special knowledge and expertise in the field of informatics. With such a rich practical experience, a dedicated team of professionals and its own R&D effort. At present Indian Railways is one of the most advanced ministries in India, with an innovative and extensive IT environment.
