PLC is a industrial computer control system that control output devices on the basis of the state of input devices.

PLC

HISTORY OF PLC
Developed a group of engineers from GENERAL MOTOR CORPORATION in 1968 . MPS based PLC was introduced by ALLEN BRADLEY CORPORTION in 1977. It is defined by NATIONAL ELECTRICAL MANUFACTURER Association (NEMA) IN 1978.

FUNCTION OF PLC
On/Off Timing Counting Data handling Sequencing Control Arithmetic

INPUT /OUTPUT
INPUT OUTPUT Sensing Devices Switches and pushbuttons Proximity sensors Limit switches Actuators Pressure switches

Valves Solenoids Motor

Pumps

REQUIREMENT OF PLC
Increase productivity & Fine Quality control High speed of operation Historical data for network analysis Real time monitoring Reduction of fault Restoration time Real time monitoring

DISADVANTAGES/LIMITATION
Technology limits Initial cost are relatively high Require human expertise Language recognition Unpredictable development costs

Simple PLC

analog inputs / outputs binary outputs

PLC OPERATION
Input scan Program scan Output scan housekeeping

ARCHITECTURE OF PLC

Central processing unit Memory Input / Output section for communication with peripherals(ADC,DAC)

PROGRAMMING LANGUAGUES
Ladder Diagram Sequential Function Charts (SFC) Function Block Diagram (FBD) Structured Text (ST) Instruction List

APPLICATION
Packaging Water treatment Power Generation Security system Material handling Automated assembly

SCADA
Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition Scada refers to a system that collects data from Remote terminal units (RTUs) or PLCs then send this data to a central computer which then manages and control the data First used in 1960s

FEATURES OF SCADA
Dynamic process graphics Real time and historical trend Alarms Recipe management Securing Report generation Data base connectivity Device connectivity

SCADA (WINCC FLEXIBLE)

Human machine interface (HMI) Supervisory system Remote terminal units(RTUs) Programmable logic controller Communication infrastructure

CONCLUSION

Automation has reduced human labour and increased the efficiency. It has lead to faster processing . PLC and SCADA are playing a very important part in automation
