American multinational financial services corporation. The company is best known for its credit card, charge card, and traveler's cheque businesses. BusinessWeek and Interbrand ranked American Express as the 22nd most valuable brand in the world. Fortune listed Amex as one of the top 20 Most Admired Companies in the World. American Express has its own niche in the market.

American Express was started as an express mail business

in Albany, New York, in 1850. In 1882, American Express started its expansion in the area of financial services by launching a money order business to compete with the United States Post Office's money orders. American Express Traveler's Cheque which was launched in 1891 in denominations of $10, $20, $50, and $100. In 1950 American Express launched their charge card and later on the came up with gold card in the year 1966 followed by the Platinum card in the year 1984. After the launch of platinum card there was no stopping to the American Expresss growth story.

Credit card usage in India is on a steady rise. Growth in the electronic payments sector has been

tremendous which includes credit cards, debit cards, charge cards etc. Industry sources estimate that just over 20% of the affluent people have credit cards in India compared to over 80% in the countries, such as the US, the UK and, even Hong Kong.
