Telecommunication

Telecommunications is a general term for a vast array of technologies that send information over distances. Mobile phones, land lines, satellite phones and voice over Internet protocol are all telephony technologies -- just one field of telecommunications. Radio, television and networks are a few more examples of telecommunication. A revolution in wireless telecommunications began in the first decade of the 20th century, with Guglielmo Marconi winning the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1909 for his pioneering developments in wireless radio communications. Other highly notable pioneering inventors and developers in the field of electrical and electronic telecommunications include Charles Wheatstone and Samuel Morse (telegraph) , Alexander Graham Bell (telephone), Nikola Tesla, Edwin Armstrong, and Lee de Forest (radio), as well as John Logie Baird and Philo Farnsworth (television). Telecommunications play an important role in the world economy and the worldwide telecommunication industry's revenue was estimated to be $3.85 trillion in 2008. The service revenue of the global telecommunications industry was estimated to be $1.7 trillion in 2008, and is expected to touch $2.7 trillion by 2013.

History of the Internet

The history of the Internet starts in the 1950s and 1960s with the development of computers. This began with point-to-point communication between mainframe computers and terminals, expanded to point-to-point connections between computers and then early research into packet switching. The Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks that use the standard Internet protocol suite to serve billions of users worldwide. Internet can be seen in the form of:

History of Internet in Pakistan

The Internet industry in Pakistan has come a long way over the last 8 years when the first dial up E-mail service was introduced in the country by Imran-Net. In 1994 - 95 time frame, Digicom, an entrepreneurial Internet venture launched on-line Internet service in Karachi. This heralded the beginning of Internet industry in Pakistan. Rest is history. The market has now grown manifolds with the largest majority of subscribers in Karachi while the rest are almost evenly divided between Lahore and Islamabad. The three cities jointly provide over 90% of the customer base and expansion in activity is also likely to remain primarily confined to these cities because of the concentration of economic activity in these cities.
