Introduction & evolution of banking


A bank is a financial institution that provides banking and other financial services. The word bank is derived from the Italian banca, which is derived from German and means bench. Bank is a lawful organisation, which accepts deposits that can be withdrawn on demand. It also lends money to individuals and business houses that need it.. .

The General Bank of India was first Joint Stock Bank to be established in the year 1786. Establishment of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in 1935, the central banking responsibilities that the Imperial Bank of India was carrying out came to an end, leading it to become more of a commercial bank An act of parliament passed in May 1955, State Bank of India was established in Jul, 1955. In 1959, State Bank of India took over the eight former stateassociated banks as its subsidiaries.

Product
Banks in India have traditionally offered mass banking products. Most common deposit products being Savings Bank, Current Account, Term deposit Account Lending products being Cash Credit and Term Loans. A few foreign & private sector banks have already introduced customised banking products like Investment Advisory Services, Cash Management services, Investment products Tax Advisory services. Products like debit cards, Flexi deposits ATM cards personal loans including consumer loans Housing loans and vehicle loans have been introduced by a number of banks.
