Write what you think the admissions committee wants to hear You are probably wrong, and such a response is likely to make you blend into the crowd rather than stand out from it. Use empty, vague, over-used words or phrases Avoid words like meaningful, beautiful, challenging, invaluable, rewarding and statements like Ive always wanted to be a Try to be funny You dont want to take the risk that they wont get the joke.

Lecture your audience about education Get too personal about religion, politics, or your lack of education (avoid emotional catharsis) Allow any superficial errors in spelling, mechanics, grammar, punctuation, format, or printing to creep under your vigilant guard

When the students were told to work on a few problems form their worksheet, I approached a boy in the back of the classroom to see if he was doing the work. Like most days I was there, his worksheet was blank. After I asked him to at least get started on the problems, he quickly shot back with, Im going into the military, and they dont care if I know math. I was caught off guard and could only provide a response that I knew wouldnt hold any weight. I walked away upset with myself. I cant expect students to put any effort towards a subject that even I, as the tutor or teacher, cant offer at least one true reason for studying. Since then, I have identified a myriad of reasons so I can be ready when ay of my friends or students ask. Provide concrete examples and avoid abstractions Be honest and sincere in your statements

Embarking on my first journey to tutor at [X High School], I had the goal of applying my most sincere effort towards giving individual attention and guidance to those students who may have become lost in a bustling, fast-paced classroom environment. I was determined to discern the foundation to which the students problem was fastened. Was it the failure of the student to complete homework assignments? Or, did he or she simply have difficulty understanding the material? However, I was shocked to discover that often, the problem was attached not to a students inability to complete assignments or understand the material, but to a foundation that had not been developed properlythe ability to read. Be interesting and creative Make the first paragraph the best paragraph in your essay

When I left tutoring on that particular afternoon, I had been changed forever. I knew that if the student had not confided in me, I would not have been able to inform the proper school officials about the issue and the student could potentially have suffered more. My newfound perspective on diversity helped me to witness not only the cultural and religious differences found in students, but the emotional differences, as well. After this experience, I remain dedicated to making sure diversity only brings acceptance and peace. Be honest and sincere in your statements Seriously think about, reflect on, and write about how your experiences have influenced your thinking about diversity Provide concrete examples and avoid abstractions Be sure to connect your experiences directly to the essay prompt

The term Third Culture Kids (TCK) has been used to describe an individual like me; the third culture being somewhat of a merging between all the cultures that influenced me to the point where I create my own unique one. [] Some people who like to make sense of what they see always question my quirks and misunderstand my ulterior motives which is simply an ardent wish to not offend anybody. The occasional quiet confusion that surfaces because of my inevitable gaps in culture keeps me befuddled and search for clear understanding. This slightly bitter and self-pitying state has been dramatically changedas I was teaching [English] at [X University], where the incoming freshmen needed to acquire basic English skills. This third culture was not exclusive to me and the other global nomads, and its becoming more pervasive and evident everywhere I go. Seriously think about, reflect on, and write about how your experiences have influenced your thinking about diversity Be honest and sincere in your statements Be interesting and creative

[John Smith] is a sophomore geometry teacher and a football coach at [X High School]. At the end of my senior season of high school football, he spoke words that truly inspired me to follow in his footsteps in becoming a high school math teacher. Following a season of many losses and let downs, Coach [Smith] said the following to the team. He told us that twenty years from now, he will not care about our win-loss record; he will care about what we have done with our lives. At the end of the day, what matters to all of the teachers and coaches is that they have inspired us to do something with our lives. I have been inspired. My teachers and coaches are my mentors. I can see myself being able to make math enjoyable for students while inspiring them to become productive members of society. There is no other career that could possibly be as rewarding as a career teaching high school math and inspiring others like I was inspired by my teachers. Use empty, vague, over-used words or phrases Writing what you think the admissions committee wants to hear Provide concrete examples and avoid abstractions Be sure to connect your experiences directly to the essay prompt

Community service is something I believe is extremely important for all students and teachers. [] As a teacher I know I will strive to help to provide students with community service opportunities that are not only beneficial to the community, but are enjoyable and fund for students as well. It is vital that students become involved in community service because part of my objective as a teacher is to inspire students to give back to their community. Every student in every school should have an amazing education to prepare them for the opportunities that lie ahead. Empty, vague, over-used words or phrases Writing what you think the admissions committee wants to hear Provide concrete examples and avoid abstractions
