The ABCs of American Culture

Mrs. Harrison s 5th Grade Class Rawson-Saunders School 2011-2012

United States of America Culture

 Our culture is a mix of many different heritages and traditions.  We created an ABC book of some of our favorites.

- Austin

(our home)

     

We live in the city of Austin. This is in the state of Texas, in the country of America.

B - Baseball

Baseball is played by many people in our country.

- Cars, cars, everywhere


 Our country is very large. The state of Texas is the second largest in our country.  Most people drive cars to get around.

- Democracy

 In America, we vote on things that we like or don t like.  What the majority, or most, of the people want, is what we get. This is how we vote for our president, laws, and rules.

- Electronics

We use a lot of electronics in our everyday lives. We watch television, play video games, use computers and cell phones to do work, communicate and play games.

Freedom, flag
 The eagle is our nation s mascot. It represent freedom.  Our flag has 50 stars on it one for each state. The 13 stripes represent the 13 colonies our country started with.

Grand Canyon
 We have many different kinds of lands in our country.  One famous place is called the Grand Canyon.  It is located in the state of Arizona.  It is the largest canyon in America.

H - Houses
 Our houses all look a little different.

 Many of our neighborhoods have houses close together.

Ice Cream
 We love ice cream! It is a cold, delicious treat.

of July
 The 4th of July is our countries Independence Day. We celebrate this with parades and fireworks.

K - kites
 When it is windy, we like to fly kites.

Learning in School

 We go to school 5 days a week, Monday through Friday.  We learn about many different things in school.

M - movies
 We make and watch lots, and lots of movies in our country.  Hollywood in California is the main location of movie sets.  Hollywood, California

 The White House is where the President lives and works.

National Monuments
 This is Mount Rushmore. This shows 4 president faces carved into a mountainside.

President Obama

 Every 4 years, our country elects a new president.  President Obama is our president right now.

P - pizza
 Pizza is a favorite food in America. It is a dough covered with tomato paste, cheese and sometimes vegetables and meat.

 Our culture is like a quilted blanket.  We all have our culture and traditions that we brought to this land.  Even though we are different, our culture comes together to make something beautiful.

 We have all kinds of different music in America, but Rock n Roll is pretty unique to our country. Click on the symbol to the left to hear some.

T - Texas
 This is our home state.  In Texas, we have many longhorn cows.  The star is our symbol along with the yellow rose.  Texas is the second largest state it s huge!

U - Universities
 Every state has many universities or colleges.  This is where you go after high school to further your education for a job.  The University of Texas is in Austin where we live.

Valentine s Day
 Every year, on February 14th we celebrate Valentine s Day.  On this day we give cards to our loved ones.

 This is a huge park in America. There are geysers, waterfalls, and lots of land and animals to see.

Z - Zoos
 We have many zoos in our country. These are places where people can go to see different animals from around the world.
