Introduction
Valve timing plays an important role in engine performance. Valves generally control the amount of charge or intake air into the engine cylinder. In conventional engines, valves open or close in the correct amount and for correct duration at correct time only for a particular speed. Speeds other than above mentioned speed; timing, duration and lift are not optimized. In a valve timing technology equipped engine, valve opening or closing timing, duration and lift are optimized for either inlet or both inlet and outlet valves at all engine speeds or according to engine requirements. Optimizing valve opening or closing timings in an engine improves engine breathing thereby improving engine performance and reducing fuel consumption. Also improves engine torque over wide range of speeds, reduces pumping losses, and also effects various engine operating parameters. This technology not only does improve engine performance but also reduces harmful emissions facilitating internal exhaust gas recirculation. This is a major advantage when the present emission norms are taken into consideration.

Insight: Others
The average citation frequency of the patents pertaining to this technology is found to be 4.123 Though Toyota has a major share of 13.5% patents to its name as its average citation frequency is well below average citation frequency. From the assignee citations graph it is clear that Ford ,Nissan and Aisin AW have good quality patents as their average citation frequency is above average citation frequency of all patents. Similarly from technology citation graph classes F01L0001344A1 (changing valve timing with out altering lift or duration using hydraulic lifters), F01L000126D (simultaneous multiple valve operation),F01L000904 (electrical actuation of valves) have good quality patents, as their average citation frequency is more than the average citation frequency of all relevant patents.
