Method
of specifying colors for a print job in which a book of color swatches is used for matching colors with standard inks used in commercial printing. The most popular CMS is Pantone Matching System
The
process of assuring that a color on one medium remains the same when converted to another medium. This is extremely difficult because different media use different color models. Color monitors, for example, use the RGB model, whereas process printing uses the CMYK( cyan, magenta, yellow, and black) model.

ICI, Dyestuff division established the Computer System for color match prediction in their lab, but it was for their customer only.
Color
measurement Instrument (Spectrophotometers). Reflectance (R%) from a mixture of Dyes or Pigments applied in a specific way. Optical model of color vision to closeness of the color matching (CIE L*A*B).
Color match prediction. Color difference calculation. Determine metamerism. Pass/Fail option. Color fastness rating. Cost Comparison. Strength evaluation of dyes. Whiteness indices. Reflectance curve and K/S curve. Production of Shade library. Etc.
spectrophotometer is an instrument used to measure properties of light over a specific portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, typically used in spectroscopic analysis to identify materials.
Designed
to transmit lights of narrow wavelength It does not absorb lights of all wavelength (thats why things are of different color) So since different compound absorbs light at different wavelength ,it can be used to distinguish compounds by analyzing the pattern of wavelength absorbed by given sample.

Reflected
color can be measured using a spectrophotometer which takes measurements in the visible region (and a little beyond) of a given color sample. If the custom of taking readings at 10 nanometer increments is followed, the visible light range of 400-700 nm will yield 31 readings.

These readings are typically used to draw the sample's spectral reflectance curve (how much it reflects, as a function of wavelength)the most accurate data that can be provided regarding its characteristics.

Spectrophotometers
use an optical mechanism to break down light entering the instrument into it's component parts and measuring them in an objective manner. To do this, light is first collected from the external target that the user is attempting to measure. This light is then passed through a set of optics that focus and project it onto a diffraction grating.
12
This
grating works like a prism and deflects light of different wavelengths at different angles. As such, the resulting pattern can be projected onto a set of sensor that can measure the light at specific intervals. As each sensor can measure the quantity of light in a specific area of the spectrum, this allows the instrument to relay the exact components of the light being measured to the computer.

This process is repeated for a set of differently colored patches and the data from each measurement is stored. The profiling software can then compare the colors that the patches were supposed to be with the colors that were actually measured. This data is then used by the computer to generate a color profile that can counteract the mistakes produced by the display device.

The Pantone Color Matching System is largely a standardized color reproduction system .By standardizing the colors, different manufacturers in different locations can all refer to the Pantone system to make sure colors match without direct contact with one another.
16
One
such use is standardizing colors in the CMYK process. The CMYK process is a method of printing color by using four inkscyan, magenta, yellow, and black. A majority of the world's printed material is produced using the CMYK process, The Pantone system also allows for many 'special' colors to be produced such as metallic's and fluorescents

Pantone offers chip books that help designers see how colors look on coated, uncoated, and matte stock. PANTONE Colors are distinguished by numbers and a suffix. While the number indicates the PANTONE Color itself, and is standard across all types of stock, the suffix indicates the media or stock, which affects how the ink is formulated to achieve the specific color.

Computer Color Matching System (CCMS) has great advantages in Textile Industry. For Example: Customers get the exact shade. Customers often have a choice of 10-20 formulation that will match color. By taking costing, availability of dyes, and auxiliaries into account, one can choose a best swatch. 3 to 300 times faster than manual color matching system. Limited range of stock color needed.

As
color desktop publishing matures, color matching is gaining more and more attention. The most recent Windows and Macintosh operating systems include a color management system (CMS) to assist in color matching.
