Networking, Storage and Computing Testbed for the Future Internet

Satisfying Global Triple-Any: Anything Anytime for Anyone Yoram Ofek Department of Information and Communication Technology University of Trento Italy

IST 2006, Helsinki, 21-23 November, 2006

Motivations

Two Internet transitions:

 1. 2.

From business to home

The capacity per home will equal to campus capacity

From broadcast to (all) on-demand:

Triple-any: anyone/anything/anytime Global scale: from anywhere to anywhere

Thus, it is envisioned that >90% of IP traffic will be to home (mobile) users

 Consequently,

who will pay is a primary issue

Background

 Motivated

by the external Internet activities the Provincia Autonoma di Trento PAT:

Deploying 800 km of optical infrastructure

For providing wide variety of services

to all residence of PAT

 It

is the intension of PAT that the Univ. of Trento will construct optical networking testbed along the 800 km fiber infrastructure

Focusing on the two Internet transitions

1. From business to home 2. From broadcast to on-demand

Optical Testbed Motivations

 Framework Anyone:

for global triple-any

 Anyone/anything/anytime

All ages and technical skills wherever they are All content with any formats and any player

 Anything:

 Anytime:

ON-DEMAND

E.g., peer-to-peer, client-server,

Challenges
 1.

Cisco CRS-1 [carrier routing system]:

Was announced as 92 Tb/s is actually only:

92/(2*72) 0.64 Tb/s per chassis

Factor of 2 improvement in 5 years/$500 millions

2.

The Internet is doubling: 18-month

OnOn-demand (e.g., peer-to-peer)/ HD-TV / 3D /

Perhaps 10 folds in 5 yrs / 100 folds in 10 yrs

on single switching matrix is needed

Ofek 2006 University of Trento

Sub-lambda switching with scalability to 10-100 Tb/s

Challenges (Cont.)
 Who

will pay?
>90% of IP traffic is to home users

 When

 Given

that service providers will not lose money again :

 This

may require major changes to:

IP network design lower complexity/cost Services lower cost and easy to use Applications Business models

Technologies
 Focus

on services on the end-user at home to the metro edges

Mobile and wireless are not the focus

Sub-lambda ROADMs Optical burst and packet switching Time driven switching Multi-terabit IP routing and switching

 Multi-terabit

 Very

high capacity to the home

Fiber-to-the-home: e.g., EPON, GE Twisted-pair-to-the-home: e.g., VDSL2
