The banana plant is a large herb with a succulent juicy pseudostem (a cylinder of leaf-petiole sheaths).

It reaches a height of 20 to 25 feet (6-7.5 metres) and arises from a fleshy rhizome or corm.

Each pseudostem produces a single bunch of bananas, before dying and replaced by a new pseudostem. The base of the plant is a rhizome (known as a corm).

Tender, smooth, oblong or elliptic, fleshystalked leaves, numbering 4 or 5 to 15, are arranged spirally.

They unfurl, as the plant grows, and extend upward and outward becoming as much as 9 feet long and 2 feet wide.

At 10 to 15 months after the emergence of a new plant, its true stem rapidly grows up through the center and emerges as a terminal inflorescence which bears fruit.

The flowers appear in groups (hands) along the stem and are covered by purplish bracts which roll back and shed as the fruit stem develops. The first hands to appear contain female flowers which will develop into bananas which is usually seedless in edible types.

The term banana is applied to both the plant and its elongated fruit(technically a false berry) which grow in hanging clusters, with up to 20 fruit to a tier (called a hand), and 5-20 tiers to a bunch. Although the wild species have fruits with numerous large, hard seeds, virtually all culinary bananas have seedless fruits

The fruit turns from deep green to yellow or red.

The size of the fruit ranges from 2 to 12 inches in length and to 2 inches in width.

The fruit shape varies from oblong to cylindrical to 3-angled and somewhat curved and hornlike.

The flesh may be ivorywhite to yellow or salmon yellow.

It may be firm, astringent, gummy with latex when unripe and turning tender and slippery, or soft and mellow or rather dry and mealy or starchy when ripe.

Pollination Bananas are male sterile, and those of the Cavendish group are female sterile as well; fruit is set parthenocarpically.
