Current scenario
Pessimist scenario  With 2009 now officially labeled as a recessionary period  22 retail businesses, representing approx. 66,000 jobs closed in the first three months of the Year  A further 4,000 retail jobs have been lost through cost reduction measures by retail companies. Optimistic scenario The growth of industry & it will touch Rs. 18,10,000 cr by 2010. Organized Retail is expected to constitute 13% of it The report is based on rising economic growth rate of 8-9 per cent  A hike in average salaries by about 15 per cent which may trigger the rate of consumption.

The trends to follow in the future:


The Indian Organized retail sector will grow up to 10% of total retailing by 2010. No one single format can be assumed as there is a huge difference in cultures regionally. The most encouraging format now would be the hypermarts. The hypermart format would be further encouraged with the entry of the MNCs.
