dEfINTiON Of NAnoBoTS
A nanobot is a nanotechnological robot nanomachine, also called a nanite, which is a mechanical or electromechanical device whose dimensions are measured in nanometres (millionths of a millimeter, or units of 10-9 meter). Nanomachines are largely in the research-and-development phase, but some primitive devices have been tested. An example is a sensor having a switch approximately 1.5 nanometers across, capable of counting specific molecules in a chemical sample. The first useful applications of nanomachines will likely be in medical technology, where they could be used to identify pathogens and toxins from samples of body fluid and destroy them. Another potential application is the detection of toxic chemicals, and the measurement of their concentrations, in the environment. Development of such machines is characterized under the field of nanorobotics. Since nanorobots would be microscopic in size, it may be necessary for very large numbers of them to work together to perform macroscopic tasks. These nanorobot swarms, both those which are incapable of replication (as in utility fog) and those which are capable of unconstrained replication in the natural environment (as in grey goo and its less common variants) are found in many science fiction stories, such as the nanoprobes in Star Trek. The word "nanobot" (also "nanite") is often used to indicate this fictional context and is an informal or even pejorative term to refer to the engineering concept of nanorobots. The word nanorobot is the correct technical term in the nonfictional context of serious engineering studies [1]. The current view is that nanorobots capable of replication outside of a restricted factory environment do not form a necessary part of a productive nanotechnology, that the process of self-replication can be made inherently safe, and free-foraging replicators are in fact absent from current plans for developing and using molecular manufacturing. Medical nanotechnology is often expected to utilize nanorobots injected into the patient to perform their treatment on a cellular level. Such nanorobots intended for use in medicine also might not replicate [2], as this would needlessly increase device complexity, reduce reliability, and interfere with the medical mission. Instead, medical nanorobots may be manufactured in carefully controlled nanofactories in which nanoscale machines are solidly integrated into a desktopscale machine that builds macroscopic products. 1

State of The Science

1) Current research 2) Applications of new Developments 3) Nanobot Pipeline

Interdigitated Nanoelectrodes for Nanoparticle Detection

Electrodes can be fabricated with electron beam lithography to have precise gaped and shaped electrodes. Connection of these electrodes could indicate the presence of a specific compound.

Optical Antennas for Nano-photonic Applications

EBL is used to create metallic nanostructures that and detect specific wavelengths of light via the photoelectric effects..

Fractals enhance the antennas effect by maximizing Frensel zones

Such antennas can detect light, and could be used by nanobots to seek cells or viruses tagged with quantum dots. They could also be used to communicate with other nanobots, or a controller external to the body.

CMOL FPGA : A reconfigurable architecture for hybrid digital circuits with two-terminal nanodevices

Nano-Circuits were made using conduction and semiconducting nanotubes. Transistors and latching switches were developed, and will be instrumental in the control and function of nano-bots.

A nano-circuit this size, utilizing nanotube transistors could be more powerful than any computer imaginable with todays technology. Nanotransitors might allow logic beyond base 2. (If you squint hard enough you can see the nanobots)

Electron Beam Nanolithograpgy

Beams of electrons can etch a substrate by ionizing atoms into a reactive ions which can be reacted away, leaving a pattern. This technique can create objects on the nano-scale, as opposed to conventional photolithography which has a threshold of 200 nanometers.

Thermoelectric power and electrical conductance of DNA based molecular junctions.

Not only could such nano-devices create sensors that detect specific genes and DNA sequences, DNA could be employed as a data storage device for nanobos, as a brain, and as a powersource Unfortunately, you need a PhD. in Coolness to understand how.

Nanomotor Developed! (At my home Lab, LBL!)

Gold stators are charged with alternating current, causing rotation of a gold paddle on a double-walled nanotube bearing. (the interior layer is fixed)

So, how long before they little ones overrun us?!!?

Although the main components required for nanobots have been developed, it will be at least 20 years before nanobots can be made, and be useful. Even then, use of nanobots will be limited to treating rich people, killing Iraqis, making oil and assassinating enemies of the CIA. Use of this technology for the common good will take somewhat longer. Expect many Nobel Laureates in this field.

Applications of Nanobots
Repair and Replicate themselves Nano Building and Assembly force for electronics Nano-Assasins (abulity todeconstruct matter on Molecular level) Attack toxins and foreign Invaders The Insta-sober Pill Nanobots for recycling could waste almost nothing

Laboratory on a chip (Dr. Lee) Tissue Scaffolds and Construction Nano-Medibots Clear Plaque or destry harmful pathogens Enhance human health and functioning Respirocytes replance oxygen Carrying Red Blood Cells

PREDICTIONS!!!!!!!

IN THE FUTURE.

Nanobots will create a new civilization with advanced technology and develop their own even smaller nanobots.

Every fluid in your body: blood, saliva, bile, even semen, will be replaced by nanobots.

Nanobots will drive the regular-sized robot market in to the ground until they are obsolete. After this occurs, nanobots will simply be referred to as bots.

A nanobot virus will be created that will cause people to do the robot without stopping until they die a horrible deaths.

Scientists will develop a nano-bomb

It will not be very effective.

Thats macro! will become a popular catch phrase, used excessively by teenagers around the world.

Disclaimer: No one in this group has ever watched the O.C.
