HISTORY OF TOUCH SCREEN

The first "touch sensor" was developed by Dr. Sam Hurst. The touch screen is one of the easiest to use and most intuitive of all PC interfaces, making it the interface of choice for a wide variety of applications. A touch interface allows users to navigate a computer system by touching icons or links on the screen.

WHAT IS TOUCH SCREEN ??

A touch screen is a computer display screen that is sensitive to human touch, allowing a user to interact with the computer by touching pictures or words on the screen. Touch screens are used with information kiosks (an interactive computer terminal available for public use, as one with Internet access or site-specific information), computer-based training devices, and systems designed to help individuals who have difficulty in manipulating a mouse or keyboard.

WHY TOUCH SCREEN ??

simplifying the human machine interface while maintaining accuracy of input. Durability is tested to over 35 million finger touches with no performance degradation. Touch screens are very intuitive.

How Does a Touchscreen Work?

TOUCHSCREEN HAS THREE MAIN COMPONENTS-------> 1. 2. 3. A TOUCH SENSOR A CONTROLLER A SOFTWARE DRIVER

A TOUCH SENSOR
A touch screen sensor is a clear glass panel with a touch responsive surface. The touch sensor/panel is placed over a display screen so that the responsive area of the panel covers the viewable area of the video screen.

A CONTROLLER
The controller is a small PC card that connects between the touch sensor and the PC. It takes information from the touch sensor and translates it into information that PC can understand

A SOFTWARE DRIVER
The driver is a software update for the PC system that allows the touch screen and computer to work together. It tells the computer's operating system how to interpret the touch event information that is sent from the controller. Most touch screen drivers today are a mouse-emulation type driver. This makes touching the screen the same as clicking your mouse at the same location on the screen.

TYPES OF TOUCH SCREEN

RESISTIVE CAPACITIVE INFRARED SAW(SURFACE ACOUSTICAL WAVE )

RESISTIVE TOUCH SCREEN

1 . Polyester Film 2. Upper Resistive Circuit Layer 3. Conductive ITO (Transparent Metal Coating) 4 .Lower Resistive Circuit Layer 5 .Insulating Dots 6. Glass/Acrylic Substrate 7 .Touching the overlay surface causes the (2) Upper Resistive Circuit Layer to contact the (4) Lower Resistive Circuit Layer, producing a circuit switch from the activated area. 8. The touchscreen controller gets the alternating voltages between the (7) two circuit layers and converts them into the digital X and Y coordinates of the activated area.

ADVANTAGE OF RESISTIVE TOUCH SCREEN

PRESSURE SENSITIVE,WORK WITH ANY INPUT DEVICE. LOW POWER CONSUMPTION NOT AFFECTED BY DIRT , DUST , WATER OR LIGHT. COST EFFECTIVE.

DISADVANTAGE OF RESISTIVE TOUCH SCREEN

REDUCTION IN DISPLAY BRIGHTNESS DUE TO THE OVERLAYRITY RESISTIVE LAYERS CAN BE DAMAGED BY A SHARP OBJECT

CAPACITIVE TOUCH SCREEN

ADVANTAGE OF CAPACITIVE TOUCH SCREEN

RESISTANT TO ABUSE AND DAMAGE STABLE AND RELIABLE HELPS PREVENT ACCIDENTAL ACTIVATION

DISADVANTAGE OF CAPACITIVE TOUCH SCREEN

MUST BE TOUCHED WITH A CONDUCTIVE MATERIAL SUCH AS FINGER , GLOVE FINGERS WILL NOT ACTIVATE THE SYSTEM. LESS AFFORDABLE THAN RESISTIVE REDUCES SCREEN BRIGHTNESS (LESS THAN RESISTIVE THOUGH).

INFRARED TOUCH SCREEN

is similar to resistive, infrared screens project horizontal and vertical beams of infrared light over the surface of the screen. When a finger or other object breaks those beams, the X/Y coordinates are calculated.

ADVANTAGE OF INFRARED TOUCH SCREEN

STABLE RELIABLE IMPERVIOUS TO SCRATCHES NO BRIGHTNESS REDUCTION

DISADVANTAGE OF INFRARED TOUCH SCREEN

ACTIVATED BY WHATEVER BREAKS THE BEAM HIGHER COMPONENT COST SOMETIMES REACT BEFORE YOU PHYSICALLY TOUCH IT

SURFACE ACOUSTICAL WAVE TOUCH SCREEN High frequency sound waves are transmitted through vertical and horizontal axes on the screen. When a finger touches the surface, it shortens the time for the "echoes" to reach receivers, giving the location of the touch

ADVANTAGE OF SAW TOUCH SCREEN

SUPERIOR IMAGE CLARITY RESOLUTION EXCELLENT DURABILITY

DISADVANTAGE OF SAW TOUCH SCREEN

HIGH POWER CONSUMPTION MORE EXPENSIVE SOMEWHAT HARDER TO INSTALL SUSCEPTIBILITY TO NOISE INTERFERENCE AFFECTED BY CONTAMINANTS ON THE SCREEN

The Benefits of Touch Screen

Reduce Training Expenses Improve Customer Service Reduce Transaction Times Increase Reliability Decrease cost

APPLICATIONS OF TOUCH SCREEN

Public Information Display Retail And Restaurant Systens Customer Self-Service Control And Automation System Computer Based Training Assistive Technology
