TEACHERS This power point presentation will show how to do one of the COOLEST lab activities to date in your science classroom.

Unit: The Chemistry of Life Topic: Properties of Water Lesson Focus: Density

DHS components:
1. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS)Science and Technology (S&T) Directorate's Chemical and Biological Division (CBD) 2. Emergency Response (FEMMA) 3. Border Control BY Rosemarie Wilson & Eric Meyers Mergenthaler Vocational Technical High School #410

Are you SMARTER than a fifth grader?

Anyone can stack blocks, boxes, or books but only those with a steady hand and little understanding of chemistry and properties of water, can stack liquids. What if you could stack NINE different liquids into nine different layers? Could you? Think of it as a science MYSTERY BURRITO!

MYSTERY TOWER
http://www.orau.gov/dhseducationprograms/

CHALLENGE: Given 9 DIFFERENT liquids, And 7 solid objects, Your Mission:

CONSTRUCT a Tower of liquids, in such a way, that each liquid will float on top of the other.

DRILL/Focus Question:
Use Your Science Writing Journal.
You have just started a summer job at BWI airport. You see this jar in a plastic bag sitting on the Floor. Text a message to your DHS supervisor. Describe in as much detail as possible what you see. Include the materials it is made of. Explain how you think it was made. List any scientific principles it is based on.

HOW TO CONSTRUCT YOUR MYSTERY TOWER Pay close attention and take notes

Activity/Procedure
Now that you have seen the demonstration, Proceed to construct your mystery tower shown in the following steps.

NOTE: COPY each step as you follow along the review of steps.

MATERIALS NEEDED

FINISHED MYSTERY TOWER WHAT IT SHOULD LOOK LIKE

POST - LAB DISCUSSION

DISCUSS why the experiment works. Students should understand that the least dense liquid is the one that stays on top. ASK students what would have happened if they had poured the liquids into the jar in a different order. HAVE students give other examples of Density

Part II HOMELAND SECURITY COMPONENT

Objectives: LIST ways DHS protects our Country DISCUSS three divisions and their missions LIST possible careers available with DHS Student Activities/Student Projects: Counterfeit coins Bp oil spill and clean up

HOMELAND SECURITY COMPONENT Science & Technology Directorate Chemical & Biological Division Mission
The Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology (S&T) Directorate's Chemical and Biological Division (CBD) increases the nation's preparedness against chemical and biological threats through improved threat awareness and advanced surveillance, detection, and protective countermeasures.

HOMELAND SECURITY COMPONENT

Emergency Response
The Department played a key role in the Obama administration s response to the BP oil spill, the largest spill in our nation s history, leading the federal government s efforts to leverage resources from across the country and around the world to mitigate the impact of the oil on the environment, the economy and public health. This included deploying more than 48,000 personnel, 6,500 vessels, 3.8 million feet of hard boom, 1.8 million gallons of dispersant, and various techniques, such as controlled burning, skimming and containment efforts.

Homeland Security Project 1

Counterfeit coins
YOU are the head of Homeland Security. The U.S. Department of the Treasury has contacted YOU to investigate a possible national threat. The U.S. Department of the Treasury suspects that a multimillion dollar shipment of newly minted SILVER DOLLAR coins, en route to The Queen of England as part of a gift from the U.S.A., have been stolen and replaced with counterfeited coins. WRITE a (0ne page) 120-word INVESTIGATIVE REPORT how you can solve this mystery using the knowledge you learned about DENSITY. A density chart is provided below to help in your investigation.
ALUMINUN STEEL MERCURY WATER LEAD SILVER GOLD 2.7g/cm 7.8g/cm 13.5g/cm 1.0 g/cm 11.3g/cm 10.5g/cm 19.3g/cm

Homeland Security Project 2

Bp oil spill and clean up LIQUID DENSITY AND OIL SPILL Students are probably aware that oil and water form separate layers when mixed together, but they may not have thought of this fact in terms of density. They will conduct a simple experiment demonstrating the variable densities of corn syrup, water, glycerin, and vegetable oil. Students will then transfer this concept to an examination of cleanup methods used in the Exxon Valdez oil spill. They will conclude by writing paragraphs hypothesizing what would happen during an oil spill if oil and water were the same density and therefore mixed together easily. Bp oil spill and clean up

How SMART Are You?

WRITE answers in your Science Writing Journal.

1. What is Homeland Security? 2. What key role did Homeland Security play in the BP oil spill? 3. What would you have done IF you were head of the Homeland Security during this national crisis?

Assessment
1. What is Density? 2. Write a formula for density. 3. The most important thing I learned from this activity was ________________ .
