Internet Services
When the internet first came into existence as the Arpanet, most people used it for

e-mail, file transfers and remote logins. To appreciate the many capabilities of the
internet lets examine several of the more popular services that the internet provides today.

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) Remote login (Telnet) Internet Telephony Electronic Mail

File Transfer Protocol (FTP

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is one of the first services offered on the internet. Its primary functions are to allow a use to download a file from a remote site to the users computer and to upload a file from the users computer to a remoter site. FTP users may authenticate themselves using a clear-text sign-in protocol, normally in the form of a username and password, but can connect anonymously if the server is configured to allow it.

Remote login (Telnet)

TELNET is a terminal emulation program for TCP/IP networks, such as the Internet, that allows users to login to a remote computer. Telnet is a client-server protocol, based on a reliable connectionoriented transport. 3 Reason using a Telnet Program 1. tell net allows a user to log into a personal account and execute programs no matter where the user. 2. Remote login allows a user to access a public service on a remote computer site. 3. Telnet enables a network administrator to control a network server and communicate with other servers on the network.

Internet Telephony
One of the most recent services offered by the internet is sending voice or telephony. Making telephone calls over the internet has a number of different names, including packet voice, voice over packet, voice over the internet and voice over internet protocol (VoIP). Internet telephony has been termed voice over Internet Protocol Advantages

Electronic Mail

Electronic mail or e-mail is the computerize version of writing a letter and mailing it at the local post office.
Email Program offer the ff. Creating an e-mail message Sending an e-mail message to one recipient, multiple recipient or a mailing list. Receiving, storing, replying to, and forwarding e-mail messages Attaching a file, such as a word processing document, a spreadsheet, an image, or a program to an outgoing e-mail message

Most e-mail system consist of two part User agent Which is the portion of the e-mail program that allows a user to create, edit , store, and forward e-mail messages Message Transfer Agent Which is the portion of the e-mail program that prepares ans transfers the e-mail message 2 basic component of transmitted e-mail 1. Envelope - contains information describing the e-mail message 2. Message contents of the envelope
