RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT DIVISION

Manufacturers started to think for a dustbin which is useful and ergonomics in size for the office and home usage. How to produce the dustbin which can be categorized as smart and functional. With the base knowledge of ordinary dustbin, we have come with the new stuff. The smart dustbin is first come from the inspiration of how to keep the rubbish in the office and home dustbin for a longer time with the optimum usage.

Introduction to Product

Product Details

Name: Hygienic Plastic Container (HPC) Dimension: 60cm (height) x 40cm (length) Weight: Approximately 1kg Shape: Square with round end Material: 1) Main, Lower and Bottom plate Plastic
2) 3) 4) 5) 6) 7) Compressor Plate Aluminum Compressor holder Plastic Plate ball Mild steel Inner and bottom spring Steel Interlock pin Plastics Holder Plastic

It can compress the rubbish until the desired level has been achieved. Removable and light in size. Suitable for the office and home use with the dry rubbish. Easy to throw away the compressed rubbish from the dustbin. Ergonomics in size and its function. Available at low price with high performance

The Sketches

Sketching is must be the first step to generate the ideas. Engineers must draw anything that would come in their mind and interpret it into drawing and sketches. The CAD drawing only can be made with the aid of sketches by hand. Sketch would be the main tool to improve the current ideas.

Hygienic Plastic Container

The shape of dustbin is been decided as a square-ergonomically way to keep the rubbish in compressed. The compressor plate is been used as a tool to compress the current amount of rubbish onto the optimum vacant space. The compressor mechanism of this system is been inspired by concept of spring at ball pen. Every time the dustbin is been occupied, the compressor plate can be open by twisting up the ellipse holder. The plate again can be closed by twisting down the ellipse holder (see Fig. 1)

How does its work?

The Product System (ProSys)

Hygienic Plastic Container How

To compress the rubbish, push the compressor holder (ellipse holder) towards down until it reached the limit level. The inner spring will keep the level of compressed rubbish by locking the limit level. About 20cm above the bottom level of dustbin, the spring will reach the final level and it cannot be compressed. At the bottom level, there is another spring mechanism attached with the bottom plate. The bottom spring is used to push the compressed rubbish when it is been unlocked. (see Fig.2 and Fig.3)

In inner spring mechanism, there is a key to push the interlock which is connected to the bottom spring (see Fig.4) When this interlock is been unlocked, it will release the compressed spring to the initial position (No forces applied). After the bottom spring pushes the lower plate, the key inside inner spring also will be released. To throw away the rubbish, twist up again the ellipse holder as same with the first step.

Product Design Specifications

Purpose: To maximize the usage of the dustbin. Improving the existing dustbin.

New or Special features: Compressible part of the dustbin.

Intended Market: Intended for office use where the type of thrash is dry and normally papers and plastic.

Need for Product:

From the survey that has been conducted, it shows that the users are interested in the new features. Only a number of people surveyed expressed their willingness to pay a bit more for an improved product. So our business strategy is to produce an improve dustbin that is low in cost and superior to the existing No toxic material should be associated with manufacturing the product.

4.

5.

Physical Requirements: (40 x 40x 60 mm) in size. Rectangular shape with rounded corners. No slippery surface on the outside of the dustbin. Varieties of colors could be choose to suit the office environment. Is about the same weight of the existing dustbin without any thrash in it.

1.

Human Factors:
No sharp corners or edges to cause cut of cloth or injured any part of the human body. Rounded edges give a good feel of the product. Opening and closing of the dustbin must be simple and ergonomic.

BUSINESS AND PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT DIVISION

The Manufacturing processes

The machines employed for producing the dustbin are: Injection molding machine. EDM machine. Lathe machine. Grinding machine.

These processes are better than other usable processes in terms of:

Speed of production. Cost. Easiness.

Injection Molding
The following parts are produced using injection molding process:

Main body. Dustbin holder. Compressor holder. Compressor holder pin. Polypropylene is the material selected to make the above parts. It is one of the most commonly used thermoplastic materials. it is a tough material; suitable for this application. Aluminum is used to produce the the ball bearing. Brass can be used instead, but aluminum is preferable because it is harder.

The molds are made of aluminum. Hardened steel, pre-hardened steel, and beryllium-copper alloy can be used. We have selected aluminum, because it is cost effective compared with the other materials. These molds are produced using ram and wire EDM.

Turning & Grinding

Turning and grinding are used to make the:

Inner spring. Push up spring. High-carbon steel alloy, oil-tempered low-carbon, chrome silicon, chrome vanadium, and stainless steel can be used to produce springs. Other materials that are sometimes used include beryllium copper alloy, phosphor bronze, and titanium. We use high-carbon steel alloy which is the most common material used for the production of springs.

Electrical Discharge Machining

Wire EDM is used to produce the: Compressor plate. Spring lock.
Wire EDM process is better in terms of the surface finish produced as well as eliminating the need for finishing processes than other useable processes. It is fast and economical. Since we are using an EDM machine, the material must be conductive, therefore, we have selected stainless steel for it is conductive material and harder than aluminum and brass. It is also has good surface roughness and corrosion resistance.

1. Product Survey

The survey is intended to get customers feedback concerning our new hygienic plastic container which will help us in improving it for consumers' satisfaction.

Products Survey Recommendations

1.

2.

3.

Overcome the difficulty in handling the hygienic plastic containers. Facilitate removing the waste materials from the container. The container should be light, movable and relatively small in size.

2. Processes and Products Benchmarking

Benchmarking is the process of comparing ones own products, services, or processes against those of industry leaders for the purpose of improvement.

Benchmarking Steps
1.

Select the process of the company that is to be benchmarked:

FINANCE DIVISION

1. Financing the project:

- We got a loan from the bank. The loan amount was 20,000,000 RM and the interest rate was 14% and it should be returned to the bank in a period of 10 years.

2. Determining the price and finding the total cost of the project:
- To calculate the unit price, we needed to calculate the total cost of the product. - There are three categories must be done in order to calculate the total cost: 1. Cost of materials (per unit) 2. Cost of labors 3. Factory over head

3. Calculating the profit:

-

In this step we calculate the profit that we gained from the sales of the product. Profit must be divided to three parts: - 1st part is to cover the loan payment.

- 2nd part is to cover the product expenses.
