Positron Emission Tomography (PET)

is a nuclear medicine imaging technique detects pairs of gamma rays emitted indirectly by a

positron-emitting radionuclide (tracer), which is introduced into the body on a biologically active molecule like FDG ([18F]-fluorodeoxyglucose), an analog of glucose, the concentrations of tracer imaged then give tissue metabolic activity, in terms of regional glucose uptake.

Combination of PET with CT & MRI

PET scans are increasingly read alongside CT

or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans the combination ("co-registration") giving both anatomic and metabolic information (that is, what the structure is, and what it is doing biochemically)

PET Facts
(1)Traditionally, cancer imaging has been based on detection of masses. PET imaging of tumor physiology and function is a more sensitive and specific approach than CT or MRI. (2)Areas of high-glucose activity usually reflect tumor growth. (3)FDG may accumulate in areas of infection or inflammation. Patients should be referred for PET when they are free of these conditions (4)The reconstructed resolution on our PET scanner is 6mm. Smaller malignant lesions sometimes may not be detected, but PET is generally more sensitive than an MRI scan of the body (5)Fused or co-registered PET/CT or PET/MRI images can increase the accuracy of locating lesions.
