Augmented

reality (AR) is a live, direct or indirect, view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are augmented by computer-generated sensory input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data. It is related to a more general concept called mediated reality, in which a view of reality is modified by a computer. As a result, the technology functions by enhancing ones current perception of reality.

AR technology includes head-mounted displays and virtual retinal displays for visualization purposes, and construction of controlled environments containing sensors and actuators.
augmented reality system generates a composite view for the user. It is a combination of the real scene viewed by the user and a virtual scene generated by the computer that augments the scene with additional information.

An

Following figure shows a view that the user might see from an augmented reality system in the medical domain. It depicts the merging and correct registration of data from a pre-operative imaging study onto the patient's head.

A very visible difference between these two types of systems is the immersiveness of the system. In contrast to virtual reality system, an augmented reality system is augmenting the real world scene necessitating that the user maintains a sense of presence in that world. There must be a mechanism to combine the real and virtual that is not present in other virtual reality work.

Reality Virtuality (RV) Continuum

The

scene is viewed by an imaging device, which in this case is depicted as a video camera. The camera performs a perspective projection of the 3D world onto a 2D image plane. The generation of the virtual image is done with a standard computer graphics system. The virtual objects are modeled in an object reference frame. The graphics system requires information about the imaging of the real scene so that it can correctly render these objects.

The

scene generator is the device or software responsible for rendering the scene. The tracking system is one of the most important problems on AR systems mostly because of the registration problem . Most of the Displays devices for AR are HMD(Head Mounted Display) .Display technology continues to be a limiting factor in the development of AR systems.

Optical

See-Through AR uses a transparent Head Mounted Display to show the virtual environment directly over the real world. The aim of VRS was to produce a full color, wide field-ofview, high resolution, high brightness, low cost virtual display. Video See-Through AR uses an opaque HMD to display merged video of the VE and view from cameras on the HMD Monitor Based AR also uses merged video streams but the display is a more conventional desktop monitor or a hand held display. Projector Based AR uses real world objects as the projection surface for the virtual environment.

Augmented

Reality is set to revolutionize the mobile user

experience. Augmented Reality has a long history of usability research, analysis and experimentation. Augmented reality is at once a medical, marketing and entertainment breakthrough. Augmented reality has found a niche in live advertising of sporting events. Enemy aircraft is tracked by the plane's situational awareness and sensor array that displays inside the pilot's flight helmet .

Current

performance levels on todays iPhone or similar touch devices like the Google G1 will take a few generations to make Augmented Reality feasible. Content may obscure or narrow a users interests or tastes. Privacy control will become a bigger issue than with todays information saturation levels. Detractors of augmented reality point to its effect on the young and their ability to separate the fiction from the reality.

Augmented

Reality is far behind Virtual Environments in maturity. Several commercial vendors sell complete, turnkey Virtual Environment systems. However, no commercial vendor currently sells an HMD-based Augmented Reality system. A few monitor-based "virtual set" systems are available, but today AR systems are primarily found in academic and industrial research laboratories.
