Environmental Requirements of Computers

Submitted by: Mohit Bansal

What is dust ?
Dust is finely divided solids that become airborne through a fracture process from a larger solid object. Common household dust is mainly composed of decayed skin particles, while industrial dust is commonly generated by sawing, grinding, or polishing of wood, metal, plastic, or masonry type materials.
Dust can cause irreversible harm to computer Electronics & its associated electromechanical components.Without protection from dust, serious computer errors, loss of information, or complete failure can result. The standard PC is not inherently designed to be tolerant of high levels of dust so steps are required to mitigate such conditions. There are a variety of low cost but effective solutions available that are well worth implementing.

Air Conditioning
A computer room air conditioning (CRAC) unit is a device that monitors and maintains the temperature, air distribution and humidity in a network room or data center. CRAC units are replacing airconditioning units that were used in the past to cool data centers. According to Industrial Market Trends, mainframes and racks of servers can get as hot as a seven-foot tower of powered toaster ovens, so climate control is an important part of the data center's infrastructure.

Flooring

This Computer Room Flooring is anti-static high strength super light elevated floors. The unique designing features of the raised floor include: Anti-static, abrasive-resistance with the unique style of the natural stones. All these exit its ever lasting characteristics. The space below the floor can be used for the installation of electric devices, the drainage and the air-conditioning systems. Because each panel sheet to be easily and separately dismantled. It is easy to carry out the inspection and maintenance service for all these systems installed.

Temperature Effects
Components which produce heat and are susceptible to performance loss and damage include integrated circuits such as CPUs, chipset and graphics cards, along with hard drives (though excessive cooling of hard drives has been found to have negative effects). Overheated parts fail early and may give sporadic problems resulting in system freezes or crashes.

Grounding - Computers
Most of the internal components (ie: cpu, ram, motherboard etc) are sensitive to and damaged by even small amounts of static electricity and need to be earthed to discharge any build up as do we when we touch any of those internal parts.

Humidity & Computures A high level of humidity can cause internal components of PCs to rust and degrade some of their essential properties, such as electrical resistance or thermal conductivity. Under extreme conditions, humidity can cause computers to shortcircuit, resulting in effects ranging from loss of data to physical damage of some system components. This situation can be aggravated further when computers are in environments that are not climate controlled such as warehouses or areas on industrial floors where other chemical vapours may be mixing with the humidity and becoming corrosive.

The Computer Rooms Location , Space

A dedicated computer room creates a huge benefits. A large server setup, will quickly surpass tolerable and/or regulatory noise levels (which can be varied in each state or country). The heat reducing demands will also be significantly higher. The only option is to allow for a dedicated computer or server room with specialized air conditioning that will cater to your specified ideal server room temperature. A dedicated area will also make limiting personnel access much easier to handle. Its probably a good idea to implement electronic badge or card access, and maintain a log of who has entered or exited the room. In addition to the server itself, generally a dedicated computer room will also contain disks, back-up devices, cables, and, most likely, spare disks, peripheral cards, blades, fans, and other vital equipment. You will probably be able to provide server administration remotely, but a local console in the server room is also crucial, which will allow personnel to perform functions like maintenance and administration locally.
