What is global warming?

Global

warming is the warming of the earth through carbon dioxide (CO2) being pumped into the atmosphere from tailpipes. Then the gases trap heat like the glass in a greenhouse. This is where the term the greenhouse effect came from.

Whats happening??
Scientists say that the barrier insulating the continental ice caps is melting. The impacts of warming temperatures in Antarctica are likely to occur first in the northern sections of the continent, where summer temperatures approach the melting point of water, 32 degrees F (0 degrees C).

Whats happening?

As the ice melts, big chunks of glaciers will break off and become like ice cubes in a big glass of water. The ice chunks, known as icebergs, create mass in the ocean. The icebergs displace the water causing the ocean level to rise. Some of the shoreline in many places like Florida (where the land is at a low altitude) will go under water

What will happen?

Rising global temperatures are expected to raise sea level, and change precipitation and other local climate conditions. Changing regional climate could alter forests, crop yields, and water supplies. It could also affect human health, animals, and many types of ecosystems. Deserts may expand into existing rangelands, and features of some of our national parks may be permanently altered.

Conclusion
Global

warming is affecting plants, animals, humans and the earth. We need to learn how to conserve our use of fossil fuels to minimize carbon dioxide production. This will slow down the effects of global warming.

ENVIRONMENT POLLUTION

Environment pollution and its effect

One

of the greatest problems that the world is facing today is that of environmental pollution, increasing with every passing year and causing irreparable damage to the earth. Environmental pollution consists of five basic types of pollution, namely, air, water, soil and noise.

Air pollution

Air pollution is by far the most harmful form of pollution in our environment. Air pollution is cause by the injurious smoke emitted by cars, buses, trucks, trains, and factories, namely sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides. Evidence of increasing air pollution is seen in lung cancer, asthma, allergies, and various breathing problems along with severe and irreparable damage to flora and fauna.

Water pollution

Water pollution caused industrial waste products released into lakes, rivers, and other water bodies, has made marine life no longer hospitable. Humans pollute water with large scale disposal of garbage, flowers, ashes and other household waste. In many rural areas one can still find people bathing and cooking in the same water, making it incredibly filthy. Acid rain further adds to water pollution in the water. In addition to these, thermal pollution and the depletion of dissolved oxygen aggravate the already worsened condition of the water bodies. Water pollution can also indirectly occur as an offshoot of soil pollution through surface runoff and leaching to groundwater.

Noise pollution

Noise pollution include aircraft noise, noise of cars, buses, and trucks, vehicle horns, loudspeakers, and industry noise, as well as high-intensity sonar effects which are extremely harmful for the environment.
Maximum noise pollution occurs due to one of modern sciences best discoveries the motor vehicle, which is responsible for about ninety percent of all unwanted noise worldwide.

Soil pollution

Soil pollution, which can also be called soil contamination, is a result of acid rain, polluted water, fertilizers etc., which leads to bad crops. Soil contamination occurs when chemicals are released by spill or underground storage tank leakage which releases heavy contaminants into the soil. These may include hydrocarbons, heavy metals, MTBE, herbicides, pesticides and chlorinated hydrocarbons.

How to control the pollution

Dispose the waste after separating them into biodegradable and nonbiodegradable waste material.
Start a compost heap or use a compost bin. This can be used to recycle waste food and other biodegradable materials.

Avoid unnecessary or wasteful packaging of products.

Reuse carry bags. Plant trees. They will help to absorb excess carbon dioxide. Observe World Environment Day on 5th June. Never put any left over chemicals, used oils down the drain, toilet or dump them on the ground or in water or burn them in the garden. If you do so, it will cause pollution.

Cont.

Dont burn any waste, especially plastics, for the smoke may contain polluting gases. Use unleaded petrol and alternate sources of energy, and keep the engine properly tuned and serviced and the tyres inflated to the right pressure, so that vehicle runs efficiently. Avoid fast starts and sudden braking of automobiles. Use public transport wherever you can, or form a car pool for everyday travel. Send your waste oil, old batteries and used tyres to a garage for recycling or safe disposal; all these can cause serious pollution. Dont through the waste material in the sea. Factories and industries should not be open in residential areas which may cause noise and air pollution.
