NEW Vs OLD TECHNOLOGY DISPLAY DEVICES

CRT is cheap, versatile & high quality imaging

device that has governed technology for years. BUT This has disadvantages like they are bulky, voltage-hungry, limited screen resolution and emit electromagnetic radiations. New technology display devices overcome these drawbacks.

ANALOG Vs DIGITAL TV
In the basic analogue TV, the signal are transmitted as continuously varying radio waves ( Video in AM & Audio in FM ). Therefore the analogue TV is subject to noise, interference, and attenuation with distance. Also analogue TV signals require wide Band-Width for audio & video signals, which restricts the resolution & overall quality of the image. The digital TV is transmitted as a series of 0s & 1s. Computer compressing is possible & therefore fraction of BW is required. As the signal is basically ON or OFF, the viewer either sees an image or nothing at all. There is no signal loss due to attenuation.

COMPARISON OF DIFFERENT DISPLAYS

IETE PPT 26 March 2012

LCD Vs LED
LCD has liquid crystals between the display panels of TV, which get activated when an electric current is supplied. It uses CCFL for back lighting. In case of LED the principle of working is same as that of LCD but for back lighting LEDs are used.
- Use of LED as light source makes LED TV slimmer than LCD. -LED TV has higher brightness than LCD TV. LED TV COST APPROX DOUBLE THAN LCD or PLASMA

PLASMA TV WORKING
PLASMA TV works on a principle that gas discharge releases electrons, which hit the RGB colour dots to create different colours.

- ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES OF PLASMA TV OVER LCD TV

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

ADVANTAGES :PLASMA TV has VIEWING ANGLE of 178 degrees whereas LCD has viewing of just 45 degrees. VIEWING DISTANCE for a 42 PLASMA TV is 1.7 m as against 4.6 m for LCD TV. CONTRAST RATIO is 2,000,000:1 for PLASMA as against 150,000:1 for LCD TV. LIFE is 100,000 hours for PLASMA against LCD which has 60,000 hours life. Are slightly CHEAPER than LCD TV.

DISADVANTAGES: 1. PLASMA TV HEAT UP.

2. 3. 4. Have DULL COLOURS. Consumes MORE POWER than LCD TV Not available in sizes less than 42.

HDTV - HIGH DEFINATION TV

Currently HDTV broadcast does not take place in India. Doordarshan did broadcast Commonwealth Games on HDTV, this year. There are 2 modes of transmission DIGITAL & ANALOG. DIGITAL 1. Standard 2. Enhanced 3. HD format 1. Standard Resolution of 480 i 2. Enhanced Resolution of 480 p 3. High Def. 720 p, 1080 i & 1080 p High Definition has highest level of resolution. HD is Digital, but all Digital are not High Definition. HDTV has aspect ratio of 16 : 9 (same as movie theatre screen)

INTRODUCTION

HD resolution is listed in 2 different formats. 1. No. of Lines + Type of Scan. 2. No. of pixels ( Vertical by Horizontal ) e.g. (a) 720p OR 720 X 1280 720 lines,progressive scanned (b) 1080i OR 1080 X 1920 1080 lines, interlaced scanned

(c) 1080p OR 1080 X 1920 1080 lines,progressive scanned

720p & 1080i are virtually equal in overall resolution While, 1080p is the best.
HDTV provides cinematic experience with Dolby Digital surround Sound

Higher the no. of lines on TV greater is the detail in the image

ISSUES WITH HDTV

To be able to receive HD content, it is required to have :

HD-Ready TV Set or TV set with built-in HDTV Tuner

HDTV transmission provided through satellite, and same may not

be available on free basis.

While on analogue TV, the interference causes the picture to

slowly deteriorate from bad to worse, whereas in HDTV it will freeze, skip or display garbage information.
Operators do not follow HDTV specs -- using slower bitrates or

lower resolutions to accommodate more channels within the limited BW, and thus reduces the video quality.

3D TELEVISION

15

For life-like experience of movies, sports and

games and above all you have enough money to spend buy a 3-D TV. 3-D technology is available in all LCD LED and PLASMA TV. 3-D TVs show 3-D picture only if the content is recorded in 3-D. 3-D TV at present cost approx 100 to 125 % more than the normal 2-D TVs. There is problem of eyestrain and headache due to glasses worn. Glass-free 3-D is still few years away which will address these issues.
IETE PPT 26 March 2012

16

For viewing a 3-D content 3-D glasses based on redblue polarization are required. In this the right eye see image through a blue filter and left eye see slightly different image from a different angle through a red filter. The brain put these two images together as it normally does and hence a 3-D sensation is delivered. Now instead of these polarised glasses; glasses with shutter action are used, which are costly. In this the shutter speed is synchronized in a such a way that the right eye sees the image meant for the right eye only, and the left eye sees the images meant for the left eye only.

TECHNOLOGY

SED technology works much the same way as conventional CRT, except that instead of one large electron gun firing at all the screen phosphors that light to display the image, SED has thousands of tiny electron guns known as 'emitters' for each phosphor sub-pixel. So it takes 3 emitters to create one pixel and over 6 million emitters to produce a high defination image.
