Breeds of geese

Since domestication, some 4000 years ago, ducks have been used for their meat, eggs and feathers Today, duck products are still very popular and remain in strong demand

There are almost 60 distinct breeds of geese


Many of these are found in Eastern Europe Geese were first domesticated in China over 6000 years ago

Originated in Brazil Its meat has a lower fat content than other duck The white Muscovy produces a white flesh They are tree birds rather than water birds Black and white in colour

Bright red crest around their eyes Wide and flat tail Legs are orange in colour The shanks are rather short and thick

Originated in China, most popular breed in the USA and the UK Large board body, orange feet , and creamy white feathers Head is large, broad, round and the eyes are dark lead blue

The bright orange bill is short, broad, thick and slightly coarse They are a nervous breed

Unusual breed of domestic duck


The females usually lay about 150 200 eggs per one

year
Sold as egg-layers

Their height is about 50 cm

Head is typically racy in appearance, with


a wedge-shaped bill Body is slim, long, rounded and cylindrical. The thighs are generally longer and stronger than in other breeds

Kept for its high level of egg production


Cross between Mallard, Rouen and Runner ducks

Produce 300 eggs annually

The body is deep, compact, and fairly wide and the legs and feet of the drake are dark orange

The head and neck of the drake are greenish and


the rest of its body is khaki brown

There are two colour varieties of this breed - White Chinese - Brown Chinese Both originated in China Laying as many as 50 eggs in a season

Colour of the brown variety: - Brown bill and eyes, orange legs - Body feathers are brown and lighter on the underside of the bird Colour of the white variety: - Bright orange bill and legs, brown eyes and pure white body feathers

Originated in France The flesh is coarser than the Emden A good goose will lay up to 160 eggs a year Bill, legs and feet are orange Body is long, broad and deep with a very prominent breastbone

Pilgrim
Pilgrim geese are a breed of domestic goose

Relatively fast growing


Most are very tame

Used commercially for meat

The head is trim, the crown is often slightly flattened The neck is average in length and thickness Bodies are full and plump Lay 35-45 six to seven ounce white eggs annually
