Generalization
Insert
the name of your local airport into the real airport mission statement above. Does the mission statement work? This mission statement stinks because it could apply to just about any airport in the world. Yours should be specific. A mission statement must be tailored to your company -- otherwise it's useless.
Fluff / Rhetoric
There
is no room for corporate rhetoric in a mission statement. The airport mission statement example is filled with buzz words that are vague and meaningless. Get to the point. If your employees can't relate to your mission statement, then it won't mean much to your customers, either.
3/28/2012
Confusion
Did
it take dozens of people and meetings to develop your mission statement? Sometimes simplicity is the key to clearly communicating the root of what your business is about. If your mission isn't obvious from the start, then you should consider going back to the drawing board, because you're not ready to put it into an official statement yet.
3/28/2012
Boredom
Ask
10 strangers if your mission statement makes sense and gets them excited. If not, it probably stinks. I'd guess the majority of those strangers would say the airport mission statement example does not get them excited, because it doesn't say anything. Make sure your mission statement tells a story and sparks an interest among your customers.
3/28/2012
Overspending on marketing
Do
your employees give you a blank look, roll their eyes and grumble to each other when they hear words like "mission statement"? Do they react similarly when they receive your expensive, colorful handouts with the mission statement printed on them? If you have to spend a large amount of money hyping your mission statement and trying to get employees to buy into it, then your mission statement is most likely doomed to failure. A good mission statement should be able3/28/2012 to speak for
target audience isnt external; its internal. And workers arent passive spectators sitting on the couch watching at home. If your mission statement ends up sounding like an ad, employees will only feel that management is trying to sell them something.
3/28/2012
skill that only senior leaders are qualified to do, implying that everyone else in the organization is not quite as smart
3/28/2012
dismissing the phrase meaningful work for all as new-age froth. People can care about their work and co-create a great workplace.
3/28/2012
the hearts and minds of the rank and file. If its high minded and memorable, everyone will like it, and if they like it, well have their vote. Then theyll work twice as hard. Manipulations like these usually backfire.
3/28/2012
Hiring expert wordsmiths and consultants to invent the optimum mission statement,
and
producing a document that sounds like expert wordsmiths and consultants wrote it: politically correct, but lifeless. Thats not how Id say it, is the usual response

by the founder to history. Worshipping continuity and tradition until the company arteries finally harden. Values and vision? Bequeath away. But Mission? Make it relevant and inclusive.
3/28/2012
a team can have a great vision process only to get bogged down in complex or ineffective decision-making after the fact. On a car ride of a thousand miles, the spark plugs fire a thousands times each mile. If the little steps to make the vision happen dont fire, youll only putter along.
3/28/2012
#2 Courage-on-empty:
Clarity
is no good if there isnt courage and conviction to act on it. Sometimes the team or the point leader get fired up about the next ministry chapter or new direction only to hit the brakes if a few people push back. This lack of courage may be just another way to describe approval addiction.
3/28/2012
a team of strong leaders create sideways energy. Maybe two senior leaders have different operating philosophies. Or, maybe youthful vigor on the team insists on going in its own direction. Sometimes leaders gets distracted with building their platform outside of the organization or use a ministry position in a way that promotes personal hobbies and interests. While I dont often run into ill intent in ministry, I do see lots of strong egos that dont harness together well. 3/28/2012
#4 Communication Breakdown:
The
best vision in the world will die fast if people are left out of the loop. Meaningful connection to the vision must be sustained by dialogue, visionsoaked media, and vision dripping from the core leadership. After you map out the vision, make sure you map out your communication processes and systems.
3/28/2012
#5 False Start:
Every
now and then, I see a team so anxious to execute that they move to quickly. It may be inexperience, or over-optimism. Sometimes a leader grows to or moves to a larger organization, where implementation requires more steps and nuances to bring everyone along. Sometimes a leader has a mountaintop experience and fails to get the key lieutenants together and on board for a great start.
3/28/2012
clear vision is one thing. Getting there in Gods time is another. Sometimes leaders have the right vision but want to achieve it too fast. In their drivenness, people suffer from burn-out. In times of stress and extreme performance other temptations come to the table. Its critically important not to let the work for God hinder the work of God in the personal lives of the team. Gods vision should never eclipse the godliness of the visionary
