ELECTRONIC VOTING MACHINE (EVM)

Abstract
Electronic voting is a term encompassing several different types of voting, embracing both electronic means of casting a vote and electronic means of counting votes. Electronic voting systems may offer advantages compared to other voting techniques an electronic voting system can be involved in any number of steps in the setup, distributing, voting, collecting and counting of ballots, and thus may or may not introduce advantages into any of these steps.

Introduction to EVM
It is a reliable machine for conducting Elections. Has mainly 2 units: Ballot and Control Units. Operates on a Special Battery Tamper-proof Information recorded is retained in memory even when the battery is removed.

Easily portable

Contd..,
Idea mooted by the Chief Election Commissioner in 1977 Pros and cons of E-voting vis--vis ballot paper analysed by High Power Committees Recommended E-voting to save avoidable and recurring expenditure on printing, storage, transportation and security of Ballot Paper to the exchequer

Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL) a leading Public Sector Company engaged in the design and manufacture of professional electronics was commissioned to design a machine to prove the feasibility Once feasibility was established, Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) a second Public Sector Company was co-opted into the exercise

EVM Technology Features

Centres around state-of-the-art microprocessor with built-in PROM storing the software code which cannot be retrieved or altered Reliable, robust and error free software Legacy software with machine codes used to preserve integrity and security Double redundant resilient memory storage for securely retaining data without a need for a backup battery User friendly operation sequence Portable and easy to operate Custom made to fit into the existing pattern

EVM Technology Features

Provision is made on all the sub-units for sealing to ensure that the units are not tampered with Each EVM can cater to a maximum of 64 candidates with 4 Ballot Units cascaded The EVM can be used for conducting TWO simultaneous polls. EVMs to conduct up to FOUR or MORE simultaneous polls to suit the electoral systems of other countries are developed and demonstration models available

BLOCK DIAGRAM

WORKING
In our project we have 6 inputs which represents 6 individual parties and also 6 counting outputs and one buzzer output. Initially the whole EVM was set to RESET(Zero condition). When the person enters the vote by pressing particular party button, the count of the party gets increases.

Contd..
In this way, when the voting persons enters their votes, the corresponding party counting will be increased upto maximum voting level When the person unfortunately or wantedly presses two buttons at a time. The EVM identify the rigging condition and the buzzer gets activated , also reduces the counting of those particular parties, voting count.

Contd
In this way the buzzer still goes to active high condition and the count remains the same. The buzzer goes to the active low condition by the controller of the EVM after some delay the process will be repeated for the vote entering and counting. Finally we get the counting of individual parties.

SCHEMATIC

contd
The internal schematic of the EVM was generated by using the XILINX tool which was shown above. Internally the EVM consists of counter,MUX and some more circuitaries which are interconnected to perform its operation as explained above.
