THE RIVALRY

Pepsi and Coke has been rivals from 1970s

The First *cola war * was initiated in 1975, when Pepsi launched the Pepsi Challenge.

What was the Pepsi Challenge? The challenge originally took the form of a taste test.
Setup at malls, shopping centers and other public locations, a Pepsi representative sets up a table with two blank cups: one containing Pepsi and one with Coca-Cola. Shoppers were encouraged to taste both colas, and then select which drink they prefer. Then the representative reveals the two bottles so the taster can see whether they preferred Coke or Pepsi.

The results of the test leaned toward a consensus that Pepsi was preferred by more Americans. A series of adverts were published showcasing these results

Before the adverts Coke enjoyed 80% market penetration, after the Pepsi challenge it dropped to 60%. Coke Executives went back to the drawing board.

Cokes Response
Coke responded by changing their formula, they made it sweeter and lighter
They introduced New Coke

People hated it, they said that Coke has lost its identity Cokes point dropped even further Cokes loyalist rebelled against the brand

The Comeback!
Coke conducted another study. They found that when people drank a sip they preferred Pepsi. But when the same crowd drank the whole bottle, they preferred old Coke. Coke went back to their old formula and reintroduced it as Coke Classic

Coke gained back its dominant market share and went back to being the king of the cola world.
