Informal communication includes all the various methods of relaying information or messages between people. It often is called the grapevine as messages weave back and forth and around people. It is usually used when in face to face conversation with a friend or relative- a personally known person. Informal communication is also used in e-mail, texts, telephone conversations. etc. INFORMAL COMMUNICATION DOES NOT FOLLOW AUTHORITY LINES AS IN THE CASE OF FORMAL COMMUNICATION.

The managers get to know the reaction of their subordinates. Hence, the feedback is obtained more quickly.
It creates a sense of unity among the employees who share their views with each other.
It serves as an emotional supportive value.

It is a supplement in those cases where formal communication


does not work.

It partially carries rumors. Thus, it does not clearly depict the complete state of affairs It is not always trustworthy as it doesnt follow the official path of communication. The productivity of the employees can be hampered as they spend more time talking than working.
It leads to making hostility against the Executives. It may hamper the goodwill of the organization as it may carry false and negative information.

INFORMAL COMMUNICATION

It takes place through the formal channels of the organization structure along the lines of authority established by the management. Communications are generally in writing and may take any of the forms; policy; manuals: Procedures and rule books; memoranda; official meetings; reports, etc. They help in the fixation of responsibility.

It arises out of al those channels of communication that fall outside the formal channels .

Informal communication does not flow lines of authority as is the case of formal communication. It is built around the social relationships of members of the organization. It is difficult to fix responsibility about accuracy of information .

It stretches throughout the organization in all directions irrespective of the authority levels. The informal channels tend to develop when people interacts with other people in the organization. When employees sense a need to exchange their views, they go for grapevine network as they cannot use the formal channel of communication in every case.
