Scanning Scanning: It is an important reading strategy. Sometimes, our purpose in reading is to locate information to answer some very specific questions. Perhaps, we are preparing a research paper, we need information. We need to consult reference books for facts. We do not want to read such books in details, instead, we scan. We look rapidly over the material until we find the place where the author discusses the particular matter that concerns us. At this point, we decrease our speed, and read with care until we locate the specific item of information we need: Reading Strategies: Scanning We need a clear understanding of what we are looking for (a name, a title, a date, or key words that indicate the discussion of the idea or term that interests us).

We pass quickly over all the material not related to the specific piece of information.

A POWER LINE PROJECT A decision to build up a power line connecting Raul Leoni Hydroelectric Complex at Guri with northern Brazil could fore shadow Venezuela's future participation in the Mercosur trade group, a Brazilian Embassy says. The Guri dam has the capacity to produce 10,000 megawatts of power. This huge structure set in the copious waters of the Caron River, to the south of Bolivar state, is the essential source of hydroelectric power generation in Venezuela. Brazilian Embassy economic affairs counselor told the press that the Guri dam is symbolic of the strengthening ties Venezuela has with Brazil. Weve been intensifying economic relations for some time now, the official said, adding that Venezuela could become a partner in Mercosur free trade market. The president of the Venezuelan-Brazilian Chamber of Commerce is more specific. Some sort of free trade between Venezuela and Brazil is inevitable, he said. Its going to happen anyway, and better sooner than later. Both Venezuela and Brazil have entered into final negotiations on the power line project, assessing its economic feasibility.
