ABSTRACT
The main purpose of the project that we have initiated is to build the engine which powers its components by the fuel that does not detrimentally impact the environment. Compressed air powered engine is one for which fuelling is done by the compressed air. This high pressurized source is released into the assembly, by the means of nozzle. Vanes are attached to the rotor connected with the output shaft. The pressure energy of the air converts into the kinetic energy in the nozzle & impinges the vanes which provides desired power output. The air after striking the vanes is released into the atmosphere. One of the biggest advantages of this engine is its powering source, air, whose abundant availability in nature makes cost of running decreases & simultaneously keeps environment protected with no harmful emissions.

OBJECTIVES OF PROPOSED WORK

Developing an air engine of rotary type.

Seeing the correct characteristics of air engine

GOALS
Design a sustainable machine powered by alternate fuel that

does not detrimentally impact the environment.

Propose an infrastructure that is both practical and reliable and

would support a fleet of our alternate fuel cars and machines.

Maintain a high level of marketability that extends beyond an

environmentally conscious group and into mainstream society

HOW DOES IT WORK?

In an IC Engine, the combustion of the fuel pushes the pistons

down to turn the crankshaft

But here in compressed air engine, the expansion of the

compressed air pushes down the pistons to turn the crankshaft

Compressed Air Engine, is a type of motor which

does mechanical work by expanding compressed air.

Pneumatic motors generally convert the compressed air to

mechanical work through either linear or rotary motion.

Provides High Power Transmission at variable speeds.
Safe at High rpm operations, due to their capability to dissipate

the heat owing expansion of the air inside the vane chamber.

WHAT TYPE OF AIR ENGINE?

Two options for air technology:

Air Air and gasoline

Just using air is the best

option because it drastically cuts the weight of the vehicle, and thus improves the efficiency and power.

ROTARY
Air Engine are used to produce continuous rotary power from a

compressed air system. Pneumatic motor, known as a rotary vane motor, uses air to produce rotational motion in slotted rotor which is mounted on a drive shaft. Each slot of the rotor is fitted with a freely sliding rectangular vane. These vanes are extended to the housing walls using springs, cam action, or air pressure, depending on the motor design. To provide very high rotational speed, which sometimes may go upto 10,000 rpm and even more. Reduction gears create high torque levels with lower amounts of energy input, which is sufficient torque to be generated by the engine flywheel when it is engaged by the pinion gear of the air motor or air starter.

ENERGY OF COMPRESSED
AIR
If air is compressed completely you actually get liquid. So we take

the energy value of liquid nitrogen (air consists of 70% nitrogen by volume)
A way to calculate the energy value of 1 liter of compressed air:
Energy Density/Specific Energy of liquid nitrogen = 320KJ/L or 320,000

joules/liter

The transfer to mechanical power from compressed air better

than for gasoline

CONSUMER VALUES
Cost: consumer costs such as cost of car, usage(fuel),

maintenance
Environmentally friendly, sustainable :car production, car

emissions, recyclability
Design Power Range / Mileage Convenience (accessible infrastructure)
