The effects of SRML on Foreign Language Learner (FLL) in Chinese Language acquisition

According to Shen (2004), the three encoding strategies identified in the study were rote memorization, student self-generated elaboration, and instructor guided elaboration. ROTE MEMORIZATION : the use of

REPETITATIVE rehearsal strategies

such as listening to the instructor present the sound, shape and meaning of the words repeatedly without elaboration, and have been observed to be related to shallow processing in the memory.

Therefore, self-regulated multimedia learning (SRML) which carries these REPETITATIVE rehearsal & self-regulated is very much in need especially for reading acquisition in this study.

Many study conducted on Learning English as Foreign Language , yet study on Learning Chinese as Foreign Language is very limited. SRML is to be said the most effective way for language learning, and to scaffold learning Learning English as Foreign Language been studied, the learners learn speaking best. Therefore in Chinese Language Learning speaking

Vygotsky: in order for a child to learn a new skills or concepts, s/he must be given chances to experiences for s/he own learning from the maximum support to the left-alone. SRML provides major support in CHLL for FLL compared to teachers in school 2. SRML enhance reading competency for FLL in CHLL because SRML is self-directed & with audio & video for encoding. 3. SRML provide changes in support with prompts along with metacognitive strategies to realize the scaffold concept and push the learning competency to the maximum. 4. FLL : Foreign Language Learners CHL or CHLL : Chinese Languge / Chinese Language Learner

Sample: Only involve international school students in Penang, and this sample could not represent the population in Malaysia. It studies only middle year students which age ranged from 11-17. The study conducted early of the study term and it does not direct relates to their course of study. It is totally different topic of learning.


Qualitative: Speaking Presentation - participants: middle year non-chinese students in international school penang, who learn Chinese as their foreign language. No support assistance after lesson in the school. - Environment: All students have laptop and were required to bring their laptop to school for project. All classroom equipped with projecter. - Pre & post test: to test the effectiveness of SRML in reading acquisition for

Summative Assessment: - Pre & post test on students speaking & listening of chinese text.


Reading acquisition

LCFL is getting more attention now, however lack of study on the effectiveness of SRML in enhancing the acquisition of reading. SRML ,with its unique feature allows learner to learn independantly, provide additional support teachers . students achieve reading competency with major support from SRML
