Buildings shall be designed such that emergency evacuation requirements are minimized.

Exits
Revolving doors and elevators are not required exits. Travel distances can be increased if the building is equipped with automatic fire suppression system.

Auto-locking doors shall only be installed on designated fire separation areas.

Fire alarms must have alternative power supply.

Protection
Smoke partitions are required regardless of building type. Institutional buildings shall have walls of non-combustible materials. Every building shall have an automated fire alarm system; also capable of manual activation. Fire extinguishers shall be provided. Hazardous areas shall be segregated and protected.

Building Service Equipment
Service equipments shall be installed in accordance to manufacturers specifications. Heating devices shall be designed such that combustible materials will not be ignited. Boiler, incinerator, and heater air shall be directly discharged outside. Trash chutes shall only discharge in trash-collection rooms.

Division 9: Institutional Occupancies

Windowless Buildings
Pertaining to jails, penitentiaries, correctional facilities. Exits shall be provided to permit prompt release of inmates. Release must be guaranteed and guarded by adequate personnel. Keys are only available to guards and personnel.
