What are competencies?


Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

( KSA) Success Factors. Performance Factors. Personal attributes or underlining characteristics, which combined with technical or professional skills, enable the delivery of a role/job or posting. Competencies state the expected areas and levels of performance, tell us what is valued

persons performance must meet specific criteria before he or she can be called competent. A competent health-care provider needs to successfully perform the following while doing a job: carry out activities within an occupation or function; work consistently to agreed standards of care; transfer skills to a range of situations 3 within the occupational area (20).

WHAT IS COMPETENCY?
Once

the job requirements have been clarified (and competencies provide a framework for doing this). Competencies are not "fixed"they can usually be developed with effort and support (though some are harder to develop than others). Employees and their managers together can identify which competencies would be most

It

is an Assessment of the skills and observable abilities that has been developed through practice.

Determining performance factors to be assessed.

No of Job families. Relevance to the nature of job. Impact on Job success. Relevance to organization mission and Management direction.

Some

examples of competencies required by the employees are: Adaptability Commitment Creativity Motivation Foresight Leadership Independence Emotional Stability Analytical Reasoning and Communication Skills.

Exercise
Different

teachers/lecturers have different kinds of competencies. Some teachers have good communication skills, some of them have excellent presentation skills, some of them have expert knowledge in their area of specialization through their long terms of service in some organization and some of them have the competencies to understand their students and their social, emotional, and intellectual needs 9

Competencies There are Two Types Core Competencies are based on the organizations mandate, key values, and goals. They describe those behaviors that are necessary for successful performance in all jobs throughout the agency. In other words, these core competencies are necessary for the agency to meet its strategic goals and priorities. They are found in
