STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

A study to assess the effectiveness of computer assisted diversional therapy on pain Click to edit Master subtitle style responses and behavioural during veni puncture procedures among preschool children attending OPD in Masonic hospital, Coimbatore. 4/24/12

OBJECTIVES:
1.

2.

3.

4/24/12

To assess the post test score of pain and behavioural responses during veni puncture procedures among preschool children in experimental group. To assess the post test score of pain and behavioural responses during veni puncture procedures among preschool children in control group. To compare the post test score of pain response during veni puncture procedures among preschool children

OBJECTIVES:
4. To compare the post test score of behaviour response during veni puncture procedures among preschool children between experimental group and control group. 5. To find the association between post test score of pain during veni puncture procedures among preschool children with their selected demographic variables in experimental group.

HYPOTHESES:
H1 -There is a significant reduction in the pain during veni puncture procedures among preschool children among the experimental group and control group. H2- There is a significant difference in the behavioural responses during veni puncture procedures among preschool children between the experimental group and control group.
4/24/12

H3 -There will be a significant association between the pain responses among preschool children during veni puncture procedures with their selected demographic variables in experimental group. H4 -There will be a significant association between the behavioural responses among the preschool children during veni puncture 4/24/12 procedures with their selected

CARE GIVER CHARACTERISTICS

CHILD CHARACTERISTICS

Sensitive to cues

Alleviation of distress

Before the venipuncture, procedure children may show/give cues of many kinds: crying, fear of pain, fussiness, changes in body activities and poor behavioral response. Experimental group: Computer assisted diversional therapy was given before, during and after veni puncture procedure using laptop with animated videos, songs , rhymes and games for the duration of 15 minutes.

Response to care giver: assessment of pain and behavioral response of preschool children by using pain scale and observed child distress scale MILD

NURSING IMPLICATIONS
NURSING SERVICE:Health promotion is a vital function of the nurse she can help in installing rhymes and animation songs in the laboratory and injection OP The computer aided diversional therapy can be used by the nurse to implement the services in the paediatric OPD.
4/24/12

NURSING EDUCATION: Educate the student regarding computer aided diversional therapy that will help the students in gaining knowledge and skill in using computers for diversion. The finding would help nurse in planning, organizing and implementing pain less procedures in the preschool children. 4/24/12

NURSING RESEARCH: This study findings may be effectively utilized by the emerging researchers. This study can be baseline for further studies to build upon.

4/24/12

RECOMMENDATION Similar studies can be undertaken in large samples to generalise the findings Limitations The researcher has faced difficulty to get co-operation from the laboratory staff, as it is time consuming during peak OP hours.
