What is the definition of organic milk ?

Is a milk from cows that have been exclusively fed organic feed, have not been treated with synthetic hormones or other chemicals, are not given certain medications to treat sickness.

*Organic Milk

What is the difference between Organic milk production and Regular milk production ?

Organic milk is obtained from cows that feed on grass that is not sprayed with fertilizers or other harmful chemicals. These cows are not injected with hormones to increase their milk production. On the contrary, the cows producing organic milk are left in the pastures to feed themselves in the natural environment. In short, the milk is produced in all natural conditions.

*Regular Milk Contrary to organic milk, regular or conventional milk is obtained from cows that are fed on grass sprayed with fertilizers or chemicals. There may also be a possibility of the cows being treated with hormones to enhance their milk production. Regular milk is obtained from cows that are kept in sheds (barn) and are fed on grain. Regular milk contains antibiotics and synthetic hormones, and has a lower shelf life as compared to organic milk.

In some respects were not that different than conventional milk

Organic farmers are affected by increases in energy costs When feed costs go up, its harder for farmers to make money, so they feed less high quality proteins, etc. We have spring flush, too

Economies of Size in Organic Milk Production

The emergence of large conventional dairy farms and the continued shift of production toward such farms suggest that economies of size play a major role in the structure of dairy farming. Economies of size and the role it takes in the structural changes observed in conventional milk production were documented by MacDonald et al. This section reports on the relationship between operation size and production costs in organic milk production, including what size and costs might mean for the structure of the industry.
