Acid/Base Titrations

By Rose Basquin & Marie Nicolas

Introduction

The acid base titration experiment is to determine the concentration of a substance in a solution. Analysis of acid base saturation is a neutralization reaction performed to determine the unknown of the experiment. This lab reacted by carefully controlled the volume of solution. Completion of this lab with a mathematical calculation to describes the relationship between the volume of added base and changes in concentration of the acid.

ACID/BASE TITRATIONS

During the experiment, given unknown solid acid sample. Three separate 250mL beakers used with solid acid sample accurately weigh 0.001, 0.150 and 0.200 grams each dissolved in 100 mL distilled water. The solution contain acid of unknown place into a container and NaOH known concentration is slowly added from the buret in small volume amount. After adding and collecting the data for each sample carefully read from the buret measured to the nearest hundredth of a mL, and the data collection program reads the pH than incorporate data into graphs. The Finding the location of the equivalence point by the measurement of hydrogen ion concentration at each point in the titration volume of base that reacts completely with the unknown concentration of acid.

ACID /BASE TIRATIONS

Therefore, by knowing the volume of base at the equivalence point and concentration base one able to calculate the initial concentration of the acid. Hydrogen plus unknown acid with a base of Sodium Hydroxide calculate as followed:

Real Life Uses of Titrations

Medical uses for determining proportions for IV drips, and monitoring blood glucose levels. Food industry for measuring oils and fat content in different food products. Biodiesel production for measuring the pH of waste vegetable oil. Aquarium Water Testing in determining different components of underwater life.

Conclusions

The titration experiment was designed to test the acid and base of the unknown substance. When performing this experiment one have to followed each procedure carefully in order to reach the outcome of knowing what the acid/base of the unknown substance is. Although we encounter with some computer errors but we were able to completed the lab objectives successfully.
