Unseen Poetry SA1 Practice

Common mistakes: 1. st-st-stammers is not alliteration. Rather, it is repetition of the consonant sound st. has an onomatopoeic effect for humour. 2. rhyme alive with Chanel Number 5 = reference to popular brand and is funny. Also used to reveal the modern setting of the poem. 3. Do not use weird to describe words. Use unusual imagery and/or metaphor. (eg. Grocery basket) 4. Misconception of literary technique/device unusual word placement (order). If you do not know the poetic device, do not mention it. Rather, describe the device that is used (eg. the poet uses st-st-stammer to allow readers to visualise the scene). However, someone who is able to identify the correct poetic device will be awarded brownie points i.e. marks!

5. Author uses diction to show that she is jealous. Diction (diction=word choice) is used in ALL texts! Should state the effect of diction used. (eg. humour through exaggeration etc) 6. beautiful butcher apprentice taken as inappropriate description for a male. Should focus rather on alliteration here, which draws our attention to the use of diction beautiful. Shows her obsession for him. 7. Humour stems from irony. What is expected versus what actually happened. 8. A single sentence does not make a paragraph. Minimum 2 sentences for each paragraph.

9. Poet and writer do not equate to narrator! (eg. Poet does not fall in love with narrator) 10. Many failed to answer question directly, not linking up to the focus of the question (eg. Not tying up to humour) PEEL not EEL or EEP. 11. Identifying of wrong literary device results in invalid point. Paragraph will be disregarded when grading. 12. Min. 4 points (has to be well developed)

Women without Men

How do you feel about the women in the poem? Why?
1. 2. State your opinion. I feel that the women in the poem are independent. Annotate the poem, identifying evidence to support your opinion. 3. Select a piece of evidence that supports your opinion and write a PEEL paragraph. i. POINT: The women are independent because they are able to earn their own living and manage people. ii. EXPLANATION/ EXAMPLE: In the first stanza, the narrator says that the women manage people instead of concede their lives to men. This means that the women are leading independent lives when they do not sacrifice their lives to do household chores and please their husbands. Instead, they earn their own living by working in the corporate world and managing people. iii. LINK: Therefore, they do not need to depend on anyone else for a living, are independent, and even exercise power when they manage people.

What is your impression of Grandmother here? Justify with evidence from the passage.

Suggested Answer
i. POINT: I think that Grandmother is strong-willed and is not afraid to stand for what she believes in. ii. EXPLANATION/ EXAMPLE: She was determined to speak her mind and express how ashamed it makes her feel seeing father in that uniformdespite there being many people around her, she said Father does terrible, terrible things and that she want[ed] to tear the eyes from her head to see him in that uniform. iii. LINK: This shows that Grandmother is not afraid to say what she thinks no matter how unpopular her viewpoint may be. - courtesy of Sabrena, 2C

Suggested Answer 2
i. POINT: Grandmother is a righteous woman. ii. EXPLANATION/ EXAMPLE: When she was talking to Father, she says that she is ashamed of the terrible things he does and goes to the extent of blaming herself. She feels strongly against Father being a German soldier and says that seeing him in that uniform makes her want to tear her eyes from her head. This shows the extreme extent to which she disagrees with what the German soldiers do.

Part (B)
Do you think Father is a kind person? Explain why.

Suggested Answer
i. POINT: Yes, Father is a kind person.
ii. EXPLANATION/ EXAMPLE: Despite him being a Nazi, he is a kind man who cares for the well-being of others. In the conversation between Maria and Bruno, she says that Father gave her a job, a home and food. He even arranged for Marias mothers hospital care despite not being obliged to. This shows another side of Father and how selfless he is to be able to be willing to help others. iii. LINK: Thus, he is actually a kind person under a tough demeanor.

Suggested Answer 2
POINT: Yes, Father is a kind person. EXPLANATION/ EXAMPLE 1: It was said that Father had done 'many things of which (Bruno) should be proud of' and how Father 'took (Maria) in and helped her when she needed him'. Maria was also given 'a job, a home' and good when she was deprived of them, along with the fact that Father 'offered' help when 'times were hard', imply that Father had a heart.

EXPLANATION/ EXAMPLE 2: Father, although 'not obliged to', gave 'a lot of hospital care' to Maria's mother and even 'paid for it out of his own pocket', just because she was 'a friend to his mother', 'paying all the expenses for her funeral too'.
LINK: All the deeds that Father carried out clearly depicts the kindness in his soul and the warmth he has in his heart.
