An Introduction To Genetically Modified Organisms & Foods

Genetically modified foods or biotech foods are foods derived from genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Genetically modified organisms have had specific changes introduced into their DNA by genetic engineering techniques. These techniques are much more precise than mutagenesis (mutation breeding) where an organism is exposed to radiation or chemicals to create a non-specific but stable change. Other techniques by which humans modify food organisms include selective breeding; plant breeding, and animal breeding, and somaclonal variation. Genetically Modified foods (GM foods) were first put on the market in 1996. Typically, genetically modified foods are transgenic plant products: soybean, corn, canola, rice, and cotton seed oil.

OBJECTIVE
Merck is planning to introduce Genetically Modified foods in India. The main purpose of this survey is to understand the current awareness of Genetically modified foods in the market and create a strategy to increase the awareness & introduce their products & benefits to the consumer. To analyse the above given case, a questionaire was formulated by a group of students from Part Time MBA of Welingkar College.

Questionnaire

Ans- Yes No 2) Why are Genetically Modified Foods produced? Ans To benefit the producer To benefit the consumer To increase the product qualities & price None of the above

3 ) Should Genetically Modified Foods be produced or not? Ans - They should be produced They Should not be produced They should be produced abundantly They should be produced in small quantities

4) Genetically Modified Foods would be beneficial or harmful? Ans - Beneficial Harmful Beneficial if consumed in small quantities Harmful if consumed in higher amounts 5) Do Genetically Modified Foods lead to any allergic reaction? Ans Yes No May be possible 6) Are Genetically Modified Foods stable or safe? Ans - Yes No be Dont Know Not

Ans : Yes No Might Be 10) What kinds of Genetically Modified Foods are available in market currently and Internationally? Ans - Fruits Vegetables Vaccines No Idea 11) What is the state of public debate on Genetically Modified Foods in other regions of the world ? Ans : For it Against it Not clear Unaware

Analysis of Questionaire
The following factors were considered while framing the question set.

HYPOTHESIS
Q1 : Are you aware about the term GMOs & Genetically Modified Foods?
Ans : YES NO Test For Equality of Single Population Proportion YES 41 Alternate Hypothesis : H1 : P > 0.70 Test Statistic is Z = (P-Po) / SQRT (PoQo / n) NO 9 Ho : P = 0.70 TOTAL 50

Where P = 0.82, Po = 0.70, Qo = 1-Po = 0.30

9

Reject Ho When P>Po

Z>Z

Z = 1.87 > Z0.05 = 1.64 Therefore reject Ho

Analysis : More than 70% people are aware of GMFs at 5% level of significance.

Q 11 : What is the state of public debate on GMFs in other regions in the world?
A : For It B : Against It C : Not Clear D : Unaware Whether Gender & Stand for GMFs are independent Chi Square = 1.182 Cramers V = 0.164 Interpretation : Since V = 0.164, there is a weak association between gender and Stand for GMFs

Analysis : Conclude that gender and Stand for GMFs are independent & are not related to each other.

SUMMARY
On basis of the survey conducted, it can be summarized that most of the people are aware of the term GMOs & GMFs but are still unclear about its benefits, effects on nature & consumption effects.

The Survey indicates that more information is required to be passed on to the consumers to increase the awareness of GMFs before launching any GM Products in India. Thus it would be advisable for Merck to plan some strategy to increase awareness amongst the consumers & then launch the products within a positive & receptive market.
