PETROL ENGINES uses an ELECTRIC SPARK for

IGNITION. DIESEL ENGINES rely on FUEL COMPRESSION for ignition. GAS TURBINES uses MAGENTO TYPE ignition systems, also have a CAPACITOR DISCHARGE IGNITION SYSTEM using one or more ignitor plugs, which are only used at start up.

ROCKET ENGINES employ PYROTECHNIC

DEVICES that place flames across the face of the injector plate or SELF-IGNITION CHEMICALS.

Most modern aircraft engines use magnetos to generate

the spark, magnetos are useful in aircraft because: They produce a hotter spark at high engine speeds than the battery system used in automobiles. They do not depend on an external source of energy such as a battery, a generator, or an alternator. Self reliable, less weight.

WORKING:
The magneto. type ignition system is used on most

reciprocating aircraft engines. Magnetos are engine driven self-contained units supplying electrical current without using an external source of current. However, before they can produce current the magnetos must be actuated as the engine crankshaft is rotated by some other means. To accomplish this, the aircraft battery furnishes electrical power to operate a starter, which through a series of gears, rotates the engine crankshaft. This in turn actuates the armature of the magneto to produce the sparks for ignition of the fuel in each cylinder. After the engine starts, the starter system is disengaged, and the battery no longer contributes to the actual operation of the engine.

Most aircraft engines are equipped with a dual ignition

systemtwo magnetos that supply electrical current to two spark plugs for each cylinder. One magneto system supplies the current to one set of plugs; the second system supplies the current to the other set of plugs. This is why the ignition switch has five positions: OFF, L (LEFT), R (RIGHT), BOTH, and START. With the switch in the L or R position, only one magneto supplies current and only one set of spark plugs fires. With the switch in the BOTH position, both magnetos supply current and both sets of spark plugs fire.

Increased safety and efficiency.

If one magneto system fails, the engine can operate on

the other system until you can make a safe landing. Two spark plugs improve burning and combustion of the mixture, delivering improved performance.

LASAR which stands for Limited Authority Spark Advance Regulator, is the first microprocessor based engine control system approved by the FAA for general aviation piston aircraft. With the system operating in its automatic mode, cylinder head temperature, manifold pressure, and engine speed (RPM) are monitored by the LASAR controller to establish and command the optimum ignition timing and spark energy to produce maximum torque from the engine. LASAR has an inherent mechanical magneto backup system that automatically assumes control if electrical power is interrupted or if the microprocessor detects a system fault.

Installation requires replacement of standard

magnetos with Lasar magnetos, a LASAR Control Box, which is mounted to the firewall, a lowvoltage control harness that carries the electronic signals between the system components
