WHAT IS EMPATHY ???

Empathy is the capacity to recognise and to some extent share feelings ( such as happiness or sadness ) that are being experienced by another person

WHY IS TODAYS YOUNG GENERATION LESS EMPATHETIC THAN THE PAST GENERATION ????
The modern-day Genration Me has become less empathetic and more self-centered than the previous generation.
The change in the society maybe due to the modern technology such as internet reducing the personal face-toface interactions The rise in the social media may play a role for the drop in the empathy. The phenomenon could be due be to do with the breakdown of the community and less interaction between the parents and the young children.

The University of Michigan had done a study of 13,737 people in the U.S. The researchers examined 72 people from the age group between 15 to 45 and above. From the study done it was proved that there is a 40% decline in the empathy rate of people of the present generation than that of the older ones.

Reasons -

Most possible reason influence of Social Media

i.e FACEBOOK , ORKUT , TWITTER .

Media content Movies , news programmes and video games with a high degree of violent content .. Social networking, which are physically distant allow young people to "lionize their own lives and "functionally create a buffer between individuals, which

makes it easier to ignore others' pain, or even at times, inflict pain upon others."

Changes in parenting styles in the 1980's, when parents focused on nurturing and not spoiling children, and focused on success and not competition as compared to todays.

Some students are more into quantity of friendship than quality... It is unrealistic to expect students to become more empathetic if they aren't actually committed to the idea..

Here are few tips for learning empathy..

Interact with a wide range of people.
Understand your own emotions. Seize opportunities everyday to induce sympathetic feelings for others.. Inspire good feelings through pleasant social interactions and physical affections..

Together we can make our world a little more friendly.
