INTRODUCTION

An extraction pump is an important part of a feed water system.Generally, fitted in between the condenser and deaerator, the extraction pump works as an excellent tool for generating the requisite pressure, to deliver the feed water from a condenser under vacuum to de-aerator or a feed pump inlet. Extraction pump is usually a vertical shaft, two stage, centrifugal pump, which is used in applications involving high pressure and high volume. Centrifugal pumps are of the type, which due to their high capacity, require a specific minimum suction head to operate. Almost all the feed systems having an extraction pump, use a condensate level controller system, which is attached to the condenser and perform two main functions: To maintain the amount of condensate in the condenser To provide the sufficient suction head to the extraction pump

Construction & working

A centrifugal pump, consists of three main parts - impeller, diffuser and volute casing. A two stage centrifugal pump consists of two impellers arranged .The high temperature water, which is almost boiling due to the low vacuum condition, enters the first stage impeller from the suction line. The high temperature water receives slight positive pressure from the first stage impeller and it then passes through the second stage impeller. In the second stage impeller, water gets more pressurized, almost equal to the required system pressure. The pressurized water then passes through the diffuser, where the strategically arranged vanes pushes the water towards the volute casing at an even higher pressure. The volute casing removes the water through the water outlet at the appropriate system pressure.

The pumps are vertical multi-stage bowl diffuser type, arranged inside a suction barrel. The condensate water is drawn from the condenser by the extraction pumps and sent to the low pressure feed heaters. In the nuclear power plants, three pumps are generally installed - two running and one in stand by. Variable speed drives are possible and the pump is made to operate safely and economically at full speed under partial load conditions.

CE PUMPS EXPERTISE
The discharge column and pump head are made of strongly reinforced fabricated steel sheets, to ensure long life, despite dif cult running conditions in nuclear power plants The pump is tted with a balancing drum, par tly compensating the axial thrust. A strong tilting pad type thrust bearing carries the remaining efforts Shaft bearings are journal type, lubricated by the pumped water. Impellers are equipped with renewable casing wear rings The electrical motor is located on a separate civil structure, avoiding interactions with the pumps and minimising vibrations The motor is equipped with its own thrust-bearing device

The excellent hydraulic features include

The double suction is located at the very bottom of the pump in order to operate under the best possible NPSH conditions The suction impeller has been specially designed and laboratory tested to ensure the lowest required NPSH at all running points, which are always very severe The pressure stages are located as close as possible from the pump discharge head

Description and Design Features

Bowl
A diffuser with integral cast vanes Suction Bell / Bell Mouth Designed for smooth inflow of water with minimum losses

Shaft

Made of high tensile strength steel

Column Pipe

Fabricated column pipes to house the line shaft bearings and direct the water from pump unit to the discharge head

Transmission Bearings

Cutless bearings are of natural rubber / synthetic rubber / elastomeric with outer shell of brass or suitable material

Thrust Bearings

Mitchell tilting pad type or anti-friction type for taking hydraulic axial thrust and weight of rotor assembly Bearing lubrication with either oil or grease Thrust bearing arrangement available either independently in pump and drive or combined in drive

Discharge Head / Suction and Delivery Casing

Discharge head connects flow from suction pipe to CAN (outer shell) and directs the flow from pump unit through column pipe in to discharge line

CAN (Outer Shell)

Fabricated CAN made out of steel is connected to the discharge head. Length of the CAN depends upon the NPSHA at site

Non-Reverse Ratchet

Non reverse ratchet (optional) to prevent the reverse rotation

Motor Stool Coupling

Rigid construction to endure vibration-free operation

For pump and prime mover flexible or rigid type as per requirement For line shaft threaded or muff type as per requirement

Drive

Electric motor with vertical solid shaft as standard arrangement Alternative thrust bearing housed in the motor

High Efficiency and Low NPSHR

Hydraulic design constantly being updated through our research and development work meeting high efficiency and low NPSHR requirements

DEFECT DETAILS: Abnormal heavy sound coming from pump assembly and high vibration issue due to this pump gets tripped and thus the standby pump started working. Due to this the pump was decoupled and at a time of decoupling we found cooling water pipe was busted many parts were broken shaft was damaged with full scratches on it coupling was seen broken from its welding

Due to heavy vibration in whole pump welded joints of the coupling were sheared off /broken off thus we have to replace that or to repair it by doing welding it again.
