DEFINING QUALITY
According to the ISO 9000 Standard, the

quality of features and characteristics of a product or service, that bear on its ability to satisfy a given or implied need. According to Joseph Juran, Fitness for Use.

TOTAL QUALITY MANAGEMENT


TQM refers to the collective philosophy, culture

and attitude of a company committed to making available to its internal and external customers products and services fit to meet their needs. Aims at ensuring Quality across all activities, levels and section of the company. It requires every process to be done right the first time and every time. It further requires that wastes and defects to be done away with.

After world war II, many Japanese

companies felt the need to change the way they produced goods and services. Japanese invited American Statistician- W. Edward Deming Deming formulated many methods and principles Many Japanese company adopted and developed Demings Principles and by late 1970s emerged global leader in their

Juran visited Japanese companies. Many American companies lost the market share to their Japanese counterparts Eventually, most Japanese companies and many south Asian countries embraced the TQM philosophy. This era witnessed a quality movement across the world.

continuous improvement of every process, empowerment of people, and continuous learning An operational definition by Deming, focuses on the motivational aspect of the concept TQM can be successful only if the operational definition is translated into strategies by the leadership TQM in an organization brings all the people together to ensure and improve product process quality, the work quality, work environment and culture.
