Shown here as a single unit, but also manufactured as a twin spotlight, the halogen Pico Spotlight was created specifically for designer Richard Furze.
The luminaire highlights the art collection of the beautifully renovated Essex Ave historic house in Mt Eden, Auckland.
The base echoes the soft curves of the MODUS Pico down light that was also used throughout the home. The Pico Spotlight offers complete adjustability for precise illumination. Models as shown and variations are available upon request. Organic curves soften the appearance of the Pico down light. Finished in Modus texture white powder -coat the luminaire is unobtrusive when set into a white ceiling as it blends in with painted finishes. The deep recess of the lamp within the Pico Downlight works to reduces visual glare to avoid the bullet hole effect of lamps across a ceiling plane. This allows for the smooth architectural lines to be maintained without interruption even with luminaires placed within. Using the luminaires in black on a timber ceiling has also been a popular choice with the straight edges of the oval plate sitting well on timber sarking.
As with all MODUS luminaires, custom colours are also available to match you and your clients specification exactly.
Opened in Late August 2011 by Paul Lomax & Barworks, The Elephant Wrestler is located in the heart of Takapuna's bustling Hurstmere Road bars and restaurants.
The conversion of two smaller bars into the Elephant Wrestler was undertaken by Jasmax Architects in Auckland. Unable to penetrate the ceiling, it formed part of an acoustic box to contain the noise of the bar, the architects were looking for a unique way to light the space. The architects came up with the initial concept of using swappa crate beer bottles as lighting. This was developed in conjunction with MODUS to allow discrete coverage of wiring and attachment with no disturbance to the acoustic ceiling. The architects took care of emptying the beer bottles, and these were then repurposed into glass shades over new generations Master LED Lamps. The lamps were key to offering a soft golden glow through the tabacco coloured glass with minimal energy usage whilst still allowing the client to dim the lighting to suit the mood of the bar and restaurant.
The pendant drop itself was purposely kept very simple and minimal so that the focus was kept on the glowing bottles however the decision to use a fabric covered flex in a vibrant orange was a success next to the up-cycled bottles.
When Spaceworks were working on the design for the new interiors for the House of Travel nationwide they were looking for some distinctive pendant lighting to match the corporate colours that were integrated into the fit-out.
Christy Ormand of Spaceworks had designed the pendant fittings she had envisaged in the stores and MODUS worked with her to develop the concept through to a finished product. Taking Christys design, tooling was produced exactly to her specification. A process of hand spinning aluminum produced the shades which were then anodized and powder coated to match her selected finishes. New generation LED lamp technology is concealed inside these pendants to ensure that energy is conserved whilst lighting levels in the areas of the store they are used is maintained. The photos here were taken in the Remuera branch but Spaceworks are working with House of Travel stores nationwide to create fit outs that capture the imagination of their clients as they plan their overseas holidays. MODUS understand that shop fit-outs especially work to incredibly tight schedules, so we are working closely with Spaceworks to ensure that we have stock of the Christy pendants available on the shelf ready for up-coming projects that can be dispatched as soon as they need them onsite.
MODUS were pleased to have the opportunity to work with noted Auckland based artists Peter and Julie Collis of Collis Studios when they created the sculptural lighting that forms part of their recent lighting range. The Waka Light, shown here was especially interesting to work on with the woven glazed ceramic form offering a fantastic play of light and shadow. The finished products are definitely sculptural light "objects" - not just luminaires. Peter created the range based on a series of bowls that he had developed. By hand laying clay in traditional pacific patterns he built up the waka forms by hand and worked with Modus to develop the light sources inside. The depth of the woven glazed layers of paper clay and Egyptian paste and the geometric patterns of the Waka Lights especially were beautifully highlighted by the soft light. With specifications suitable for use in commercial applications and hotels these were substantial pieces at approx 1.2m long. A hidden bracket was developed to float Peters delicate waka form off the wall and inside there is a soft internal light from a concealed fluorescent lamp that gives a warm moody glow, combined with a functional uplight hidden in the top ceramic face that provides indirect illuminance through an even and directional wash of light over the ceiling above the luminaire. The final pieces are not only sculptural, but incredibly functional thanks to the input of the MODUS Engineering Team. A version of these wall lights was installed in the lobby of the Sky City Hotel, with other included in installations as varied as residential homes and super yachts.
Edinburgh St is a bar & restaurant located at 27 Edinburgh Street Pukekohe. Formerly the Old Pukekohe Fire Brigade Station built in 1924 Edinburgh Sts the proprietors wanted to retain its character and restore it to its former glory as one of Pukekohe's most iconic historical landmarks.
Modus created a series of seven individual bespoke pendant luminaires for the two main dining areas at Edinburgh St that reflect the mix of history and contemporary style within the space. A larger custom pendant was created to suspend approx 3.5M down from the ceiling in the main stairwell that connects to the Bistro upstairs.
The Cartwheel Pendant design was based upon the simple forms of pendants created around the turn of the 1900's re-interpreted with modern materials and forms. Small details such as the exposed cord fixings and clear cable work alongside hand spun aluminium, polished chrome and contemporary manufacturing techniques to offer a an echo of the industrial to the refined aesthetic.
When the HSBC banking group wanted to upgrade the building facilities at their 1 Queen st headquarters they turned to Modus to provide a full design and build service to fit into the existing Lift indicator stonework and elevator interiors. Modus responded to this request by proposing the use of maintenance free LED fittings. Working with the architect from Stephenson and Turner Modus supplied slim LED panels into a custom cut frame for the lift interiors which lifted illumination levels in all the cars while providing soft full illumination thus eliminating the feeling of standing in a closet and providing a far more comfortable ride for building occupants. The lift shaft indicators were developed to stick out perpendicular from the wall and are lit internally using LED ribbon strip and provide gentle sign illumination when the new building management system directs visitors and workers to the correct lift car for the floor they have selected. These blade signs were further customized by Modus through the use of custom electronic circuitry which integrates into the standard Schindler lift system to provide guidance to disabled patrons in the form of both a flashing sign for hearing the impaired and an internally mounted speaker which operates for the vision impaired and allows the disabled patrons to make their own way to the correct lift if assistance is not available for them.
