Maslows Hierarchy of Needs

PHYSIOLOGICAL Includes hunger, thirst, shelter, sex, and other bodily needs.

SAFETY Includes security and protection from physical and emotional pain.

LOVE/ BELONGING Includes affection, belongingness, acceptance and friendship.

ESTEEM Includes internal esteem factors such as self-respect, autonomy and achievement; and external esteemfactors such as status, recognition, and attention

SELF-ACTUALI ZATION The drive to become what one iscapable of becoming; includes growth, achieving ones potential, and self-fulfillment.

DRIVE TO ACQUIRE This is the drive to seek, take, control, and retain objects and personal experiences.

DRIVE TO BOND This is the drive to form social relationships and develop mutual caring commitments with others.

DRIVE TO LEARN This is the drive to satisfy our curiosity, to know and understand ourselves and the environment around us.

DRIVE TO DEFEND This is the drive to protect ourselves physically and socially.

Need for Affiliation


A LEARNED NEED IN WHICH PEOPLE SEEK APPROVAL FROM OTHERS, CONFORM TO THEIR WISHES AND EXPECTATIONS, AND AVOID CONFLICT AND CONFRONTATION.

Need for Power


A LEARNED NEED IN WHICH PEOPLE WANT TO CONTROL THEIR ENVIRONMENT, INCLUDING PEOPLE AND MATERIAL RESOURCES, TO BENEFIT EITHER THEMSELVES (PERSONALIZED POWER) OR OTHERS (SOCIALIZED POWER).
