Coordinating Conjunctions
The units being joined by a coordinating conjunction must be parallel in-grammatical structure and importance. The following coordinating conjunctions are used after a comma to join one independent clause to another : for , and, nor, but, or, yet, and so. An easy way to remember these six conjunctions is to think of the word FANBOYS.

FOR : is to introduce the reason for the preceding clause AND : joins two similar ideas together NOR : The conjunction nor is not extinct, but it is not used nearly as often as the other conjunctions. Its most common use is as the little brother in the correlative pair, neither-nor BUT : joins two contrasting ideas together OR : joins two alternative ideas YET : is very similar to 'but' as it also joins two contrasting ideas together SO : shows that the second idea is the result of the first

Correlative Conjunctions
correlative conjunctions are always used in pairs. They join similar elements. When joining singular and plural subjects, the subject closest to the verb determines whether the verb is singular or plural.
Bothand Not onlybut also

Eitheror

Neithernor

a. b. c. d. e. f. g. h.

Both my mother and my sister are here. Not only my mother but also my sister is here. Not only my sister but also my parents are here. Neither my mother nor my sister is here. Neither my sister nor my parents are here. Either my mother or my sister is here. Either my sister or my parents are here. The research project will take both time and money. Yesterday it not only rained but also snowed. Ill take either chemistry or physics next quarter. That book is neither interesting nor accurate.

Two subject connected by bothand take a plural verb. When two subjects are connected by not onlybut also, eitheror, or eithernor, the subject that is closer to the verb determines whether the verb is singular or plural.

i. j. k.

Notice the parallel structure in the examples. The same grammatical form should follow each word of the pair. In (h): both + noun + and + noun In (i) : not only + verb + but also + verb In (j) : either + noun + or + noun In (k) : neither + adjective + nor + adjective

Subordinating Conjunctions
Subordinating conjunctions are most important in creating subordinating clauses. These adverbs that act like conjunctions are placed at the front of the clause. The adverbial clause can come either before or after the main clause. Subordinators are usually a single word, but there are also a number of multiword subordinators that function like a single subordinating conjunction. They can be classified according to their use in regard to time, cause and effect, opposition, or condition.

We are going out to eat after we finish taking the test. Since we have lived in Atlanta, we have gone to every exhibit at the High Musuem. While I was waiting in line for the Matisse Exhibit, I ate my lunch. Although the line was long and the wait over two hours, the exhibit was well worth it Even if you have already bought your ticket, you will still need to wait in line. I love Matisse's works because he uses color so brilliantly.
